the circuit court, asking dam
ages in the sum of $7.f00, and
the complaint names the Pacific
; Coast (Condensed Milk Company
:nnd Benjamin Smith, foreman,
as defendants. The complaint
alleges thai the boy was work
ling in the factory, and that the
foreman sent him to the upper
lloor. in the elevator, to got some
empty can trays, and that in fol
lowing the orders he was crush
ed in the lift. It is set out that
the elevator had no grates or
sides, or guards, and that the
.shall was unprotected. The ele
vator was of the hydraulic varie
ty, and the plaintiff contends
that the company was careless
and negligent in not having the
jtranslcr properly safe-guarded,

the fatality that the boy hoarded

pleaded guilty before Judge W.I
l. Smith, Tuesday, to the charge',
of stealing a pair of trousers
from his pal, up at one of the
railroad camps, between Buxton
ami the Salmon berry. He was
given IU) days in the county jail.
The public schools of the conn-'
ty again opened Monday morn-;
ing, after the Holiday vacation.
Owing to the fact that the
Teachers' Institute held in Port
land, this year, canre later than
usual, the pupils wer given a
considerably longer vacation than
is usual.
Charles Meacham was in the
first of the week, carrying, the:
mail for Henry Hesse, the voter-
an earner. Mr. Hesse was con-j
fined to his room several days
the past week, and it was neces
sary that Uncle Sam's mail should
be "toted" up from th S. P.

William Bennett and wife, of
Monmouth, , Polk County, were
down to the city Tuesday. Mr. !
Bennett lived at Cornelius for;
over HO years, and sold out last
Suinmsr and went to Polk Coun-;
ty, where he bought 170 acres of
farm land, a little over a mile,
from the Normal. He is en-i
