Bagley sent in a lengthy mes sage advocating the spirit of progrtssiveness. He exhorted the council to use every possible means to make Hiilsboroa better city, and to exact a spirit of im provement from all points of the compass. He outlined the neces sities of a business administra tion, and appointed committees as follows: Water and light Hartrampf. Houston, Boseow. Street W'. D. Smith, Kuratli. Heim. Sanitary Heim, Boseow, Hartrampf. Park - Boseow, Har trampf, Kuratli. Finance-Houston, Kuratli, Smith. No appointment for marshal was made, although there are six applicants for the position. A lew of 6 mill3 was made for city purposes, and a half mill was levied for park improve ments. Just how much this will make w ill not be known until the state commission fixes the value of railroad property in the city limits. The street committee was or dered to see tnat necessary re pairs be made at once; the re corder was instructed to notify the water and light system that they must live up to the contract for adequate supply of both wa ter and light by May 27th next; the street committee was order ed to consult with drainage and sewage engineers, and see what their charges will be for engin eering work necessary, the re corder was instructed to report all defective ordinances, and to get a metal case for the city ar chives; the fire department was asked to report the condition of apparatus, and present needs; and the committee on lights was ordered to report on status of present lighting. C. W. Dodson, W. E. Davies. G. W. McGraw. Committee. NATHAN B. MEAD Nathan B. Mead, well known in Hillsboro in the eighties, died at Gresham, Dec. 13, 1910, after being an invalid for several years. He w as aged 69 years, and was a native of Minnesota. He came to Oregon about 35 years ago, and for some years conducted the Hillsboro Hotel. A few days prior death, Mr. and Mrs. Mead left Grants Pass, their home for a number of years, and went to Gresham to visit a son, in the hopes that the change would do him good. His wife and the fol lowing children survive: Mrs. T. A. McCourt Dayton. Ore. ; Mrs. Bert Barnes, Grants Pass; H. V. Mead, Medford; J. H. Mead, Grants Pass, and T. G. Mead, of Gresham. The Young Peoples' Missionary Society, connected with Grace Evangelical Church, of this city, are completing arrangements to conduct three missionary orator ical contests for a silver medal, in the near futur, at Cornelius.
