The A wis asks its readers only
to Ktok the prohibition question
fairly in the face. People should
not Ih led away by the hysteria
of those whose chief stock in
trade is the cry of sumptuary
bcislation. Without this pn
hibition issue there would In?
many an exhorter out of a job:
in fact it is doubtful if they who
thrive best by battling liquor,
want the matter settled - for
Othello's occupation would be
gone. But that is neither here
nor there. What the Argus
wants its readers to do is to con
sider calmly, and then cast their
vote. The good Lord has placed
you here to work out your ow n
salvation. If you are a swine,
and go to excess in drink or eat
ing don't read this - like enough
nothing will aid you. If you
have been reared temperately,
and like your glass of beer or
whiskey -drink it like a man.
If you go to extremes quit it
like a man. and do not put the
responsibility on the shoulders
of the Almighty. Liquor will
rot hurt the hysterical spell
binder who bucks booze for so
much per buck, if he shall keep
away but for the lord's sake
don't try to legislate the temper
ate man away from what is his
right and privilege. Don't say
to the substantial German who
is of our best citizenship: "Be
cause there are a few swine in
the country who take toojr-"p"'

Just have some reason just
remember that the poor creature
who goes to the bad on drink
will go to the bad on something
else if he is punted on some dif
ferent course; just remember
that the Lord will remember the
poor creatures who go into the
ditch it is probably blasphemy
fur you to argue that the Lord
did not always know just w here
all are destined to go and re
member, before you vote, that
there is no better citizenship in
all Washington County than
those w ho take their occasional
glass of beer or wine; that they
have done much for Washington
County; that we have lived here
for many years-long before
Pvockefeller and Carnegie com
menced to boom the prohibition
cause in order to cut down reve
nues that people will hush their
crv about the heavy tax the far
mer must pay on steel used in
his machinery; just remember
that we want more Germans and
Swiss in Oregon; more Norwe
gians and Swedes, and Danes;
and more people, by the way,
who w ill take off their coats and
work, rather than receive money
from such public robbers as Car
negie and Rockefeller.
Vote against prohibition, and
you will vote for more people
who will help develop Oregon;
vote against prohibition and you
will give a vote of confidence to
those w ho have been the agency
of cleaning up our wilderness to
a large degree; take a stand for
your rights and do not be dis
possessed because some weak
headed brother goes to the ex
tremes. Do not stand for the
proposal that you are a rank sin
ner and a despoilerof the human
race just because you have taken
your glass of beer. -Resent it
and show such agitators that
your families are as good as any
body else's family; that the mor
als of the people who take their
glass of beer are just as good as
those who thunder against it.
Don't cripple investment in
your county; or in your town, or
in the state.
Meet the cry of ruin of girls by
the saloon with the truth 1001
out of 1000 ruined and found in
dives are ruined before they ever
reach such a place, and every
reasonable person knows it.
That is history.
tbeen called to my at-
wjtention that certain members of ;
the Prohibition Party have in-!
timatpd that the names of H. N. I
Penfield and A. C. Alexander
were omitted from the ollieia!
ballot, either through alleged
carelessness of this othce, r for
the purpose of injuring their
chances of election.
The reason these name.-? do not
appear on the ballot is that the
above parties filed no acceptance
of their nomination as is required
by law, and therefore a ballot
containing their names would
have been illegal with no accept
ances in this office.
Every man and measure legally
entitled to be on the ballot is
printed thereon exactly as speci
fied by the law.

lhe late Judge Kood was a
man in all that the term signi
fies. He was the soul of integ
rity; the foe of all sham; a firm
believer in justice always, and a
man on whom all could rely. The
world has been better because of
his life, and the world still would
be better if it had more like
him. This is the best the Argus
can say of the man today laid to
rest in the land he loved.
