was up on Bald Peak, Chehalem
Mountain, last week. I saw one
that I will never forget. Harlv
in the morning the sun shone
brightly on the elevation and be
low, on all sides the valleys were
obscured by fog. The top of
Bald Peak looked just as though
it were an island, and the fog
below, with the glint of the sun
shine, looked like a great wean
of water. When you consider
that this was the condition all
around the mountain, no matter
which way you looked, you can
imagine that it was a sight long
to be remem tiered,"

Why Not Woman's Suffrajte?
(An address given recently nt the Y. M

The woman's suffrane pnipixanda Inn

in befote we can come to th main argu
ment. Fiist, then, those who c airn thai
thi ballot is women' right rjttote from
the declaration of indej endeiice that,
"T xa ion without representation j,
tyranny." Hut the (jiio ation is not in
K)int. fur that sentiment was utieftd
with no possible reference to individual
voters, male or female. Ii was a dt clara
lion of ihe r prestiitativt s of the 13 colo
nies could have a rt-piesetitntive in the
parliament and in the cabinet to protect
tlu ir interests King George should not
ask us to pay duty. It had no reference
to the casting of ballots f ,r men voted
in every colony, but it was a declaration
that one government oulit uot to tax
another without due representation.
Protection for Women
In order to make it refer to woman's
suffrage it would have to be proven that
women are not now projerly represented
by their husbands, fathers or brother;
that the government does not protect
them in their property interests, and
that they do nr.t get value received for
their money.
The question of voting has no refer
ence to the paying of taxes. We pay nur
taxes in return for the protector) to life
and property, by Ihe laws r,f a civilized
nation. Koine men who have no proper
ty vote and many who have no vote pay
large tnxe. Numerous young men and
women, neirs t iarge estates, pay im
tnedse sums to the government, but have
no vote. Corporations pav immense
sums in taxes, but have no vote, Per
sons residing in foreign lands or who
have lived in this country only a f. w
years pay taxes, but have no vote. In
fact voting has do reference wlntever to
