TELEPHONING TO, THE 'miiMTPY
The City and the Country are bound
together by the telephono line.
The farmer aud his family use the rural tele
phone constantly, calling up each other and the
market town ou all sorts of matters and for all
sorts of supplies and information
City jicople also find the rural telephone of great
advautagc. A traveler from his room in the hotel
talks with the farm folks miles away. Without
the telephoe he could not reach them.
The farmer himself may travel far and still talk
home over the Long Distance Lines of the Hell
System.

Today is Kenyon Crandall's
birthday, and 80 years ago this
morning he was born in Rensaler
County, New York. He crossed
the plains in 1852, coming from
Illinois in the same train with
Hon. H. W. Scott, of the Ore
gonian. He left the wagon train
at Salt Lake and went into San
Francisco, then taking a boat to
Portland. He has spent nearly
all the time since mil in Wash
ington Lounty, aside from two
trips Last, and a few years in
Southern Oregon, Portland, Cal
ifornia, and the state of Wash
ington. Mr. Crandall gets around
as spry as most men of 50 or GO,
and he keeps his condition by
always doing a little to keep his
muscles from getting too soft.
Mr. Crandall for many years has
made his home with Mr. Long,
of the Argus.
