I Asked for $710 Damages to Self and Team JLKV RETURNS DIRECTED VERDICT Jacob Challacombe Files Motion for a New Trial A. L. Sexton, whose team was precipitated through the Watts Rridge, on Gales Creek, about a year ago, and who asked for $710 damages to self and team, lost his case last Friday. After the jury had been sworn, District Attorney E. B. Tongue moved a directed verdict on the grounds of a defective complaint. Judge Aiken, after hearing the law, directed to that effect, and the jury found for the defendant - Washington County. This stops Sexton from further action, Trie jurv -Wm. Roberts, Louis Wilcox, Thos. Corkhill. N. J. Christensen, Findley McLeod, J. J. Adkjns, John Schmoltzer, A. h Mc('urney, Wm, McQuillan, Wm. Schulmerich, Chaa, John son and It. V. Simon. The jury in the case of State va. Jacob Lhallacombe, tound a verdict of guilty of cruelty to animals, and Challacombe's at torneys have filed a motion for a new trial, which will be heard later. Mrs. It. F, Potts, of Tualatin. was granted a divorce. Court will again sit Monday. April 18, FINE WRESTLING MATCH The wrestling match at the Hartrampf rink last night was a splendid athletic feature and all who attended were well satisfied. Strangler Smith took two falls each out of Gaylord, of San Fran cisco; Armstrong, of Albany; and Anderson, of Vancouver. Smith is a very classy wrestler, and his strangle hold is famous all over the coast. Eddie O'Connell threw him, but only after the strangle hold had been barred in fact, this was the only way wherein he could get a meeting with the Multnomah man. El mer Dennett, of this city, won a tall over Baker, a bherwood wrestler of local renown and who, by the way, is a good one - and Baked secured one fall. The match was a draw. Bennett surprised some of the local ath letes, and with a little training, he would be a comer. Next Wednesday night there will be another bout, when Strangler Smith will wrestle Cole, of Sherwood, strangle hold barred, Cole weighing 215 pounds; Anderson, of Vancouver, will meet Armstrong, of Albany, and Elmer Bennett will go to the mat with Prof. Frank Ely, in structor of the St, Johns Ath letic Club. Cards will be out later, announcing the place. EXPECTS FINE FRUIT "Wilbur C. Newell, of Gaston. and who is president of the State Board of Horticulture, in his re port submitted to the board, Monday, says: Once more has the time arriv ed for taking account of fruit crop prospects and conditions. Judging from the trees in those parts of the state which I have been able to visit this Spring, if we have favorable weather all through blooming time, we will surely have a bountiful crop of most all kinds or fruit this year. Whether such hopes are well grounded or not, I believe the impression exists in most all of the fruitgrowing sections of the country that this year is the year of big fruit crops. Each succeeding year in Ore gon shows better general care of the orchards, and though the past Winter was a very difficult one in which to accomplish the usual Winter work, it was com pensated for by the beautiful month of march which allowed the work to be brought up to date. In many sections the blooming season is nearly over for the early fruits, in others it is just at hand, and with no re ports of injury or damage of any kind as yet We do not list all the property offered us for sale because a great many owners want too much for their land. Others have that kind. You are sure of getting ' the right kind at the right price from the Imbrie Land Co. S. Herman, of Portland, has not yet appeared to plead to the charge of fishing out of season, his attorney, Harrison Allen, asking for a stay for a few days, until he could have time to come out and make the defense. R. Lee Sears says he is ready to hire his auto to parties, and will turnish a driver tor cus tomers. O. H. Marrs, of Scholls, was up to the city luesday. The Southern Pacific is pre paring to electrify the road from Portland, out Fourth Street to some j.int to the West, on the West Side line. They are doing this because the federal court says it must get its locomotives off Fourth Street. Whether the company will electrify only as iar as licaverton, where nassen- gers can change from the steam cars, or run on to Forest Grove, is yet an oren proposition. There is desultory talk that the S. P. will run its line into Hillshoro in the business section by making a two block circuit, and thus tret a slice of the passenger traffic en joyed by the Oregon Electric. Phis is plausible, as it i3 well known that eventually the Elec tric will invade the territory of the Southern farther on South. It 13 thought if the S. P. shall electrify on into Forest Grove that it will absorb the local street car system in that city, and thus give entrance to the heart of the college town. II. S. Sturdevant of Corneli us, writes the Argus that the Drys" are very much encour aged over the recent city election at that place. He states that three years ago, the wet3 were over two to one, and says that last year the vote was 8 to 18 in favor of the wets, and this year the drya fought down the vote to even on one man and were only Deaten eight on another portion of the ticket.
