'HEN Deacon Dolby started
for the grocery wltb the oil
can the other evening Mrs.
Dolby bud got a pair of his
trousers In baud and was preparing to
sew on a generous patch where it
would do the most good and at the
same time was In hnppy spirits. When
he returned the trousers and patch lay
on the Boor, the lamp wm turned low
,dowu,' and he heard a low moaning
from the bedroom off the family room.
Some deacons and husbands would
have ruNhed In to Inquire of the wife
lying ou the bed in disheveled attitude
what had happened. But Deacon Dot

by didn't. H turned up tbe lamp,
kicked off hia iboea wltb a grunt of
satisfaction and then opened a letter
be bad received at tbe postofflce. It
was from his brother Henry, in In
diana. As he opened It more moans
and groans reached bis ears.
Brother Benry waa well. He took
bis pen in hand to say that be was
and to hope that these few lines will
find you tbe same. Deacon Dolby was
gratified. He bad carried a sneaking
Idea that bis brother Henry bad been
dead and buried for tbe last five years.
Sighs from tbe bedroom. (J roans
from tbe bedroom. Long drawn moans
from the bedroom. They would have
quite interested some men.
Henry's wife was also well; also bis
children. He didn't specify tbe num
ber, but left It to a generous Imagina
tion to decide. Then Henry wrote
that tbe weather bud been remarkably
fine and crossed It out and substituted
the statement that tbe weatber bad
been dinged hilarious.
Enter tbe ghost.
Deacon Dolby saw her as she stood
In the bedroom door, but she couldn't
see that be saw. It was out of tbe
tail of bis eye. Henry said in bis let
ter that money was tight In Indiana.
He meant by tbut Indiana money was
intoxicated, and the deacon didn't get
things mixed up.
"Samuel Dolby!"
It was the ghost speaking. Tbe
deacon beard It, but never turned a
hair. Henry was Informing blm tbtit
be feared cholera had broken out
among his bogs, but wasn't sure. It
might be whooping cough or chicken
pox.
Demands Account From Deacon.
"Deacon Dolby, 1 am here, and I
want you to give an account of your
self. I weut In to lay down on tbe
bed to die, but 1 beard you come borne
and thought 1 would put It off for a
few minutes. Mrs. Hincbman was
here while you, were away."
Mrs. Dolby put an exclamation point
after the announcement and watched
to detect a guilty start, but none start
ed. The deacon was carved of stone.
Henry wrote that be bad beard, but
didn't know bow true It was, that a
man In Indiana bad been arrested for
having three wives.
"Samuel Dolby, on tbe nlgbt of last
Fourth of July you went downtown to
see tbe fireworks. You didn't want
me to go for fear I'd be bit by a Ro
man candle. When you came borne
you tried for ten minutes to open the
gate the wrong way. Don't deny it,
for I was watching you." '
The smile tbat flitted over tbe dea
con'aface bad nothing to do with last
Fourth of July. Henry bad written
tbat tbey bad got a way In Indiana of
stk-klug tbe sblugle on abarn wltb
wax. Saved shingle nails and lasted
longer; cows couldn't kick 'em off or
colts chew 'em off.
"And you stumbled into tbe kitchen
and fell- flat on tbe floor and rolled
over on your back, and when I wept
over you and asked If you were dying
all the answer 1 could get was,
'Whazxer matter wbaxxer . mazier?
Samuel Dolby, look your wife In tbe
eye."
Samuel Dolby didn't do any such
thing. He continued to look at Hen
ry's letter. Henry wrote that be bad
enjoyed two large bolls on his left
leg during tbe month of September,
but by being extra good In hut conduct
bad escaped the grave. f
"I smelt of yonr breath, and It
smelt of sassafras. Samuel Dolby,
you bad taken to sassafras to deceive
your poor, confiding wife after you
had taken to beer. Tou are as guilty
as Mr. Ha man or Hyman or whoever
it was tbat waa hung so high, and the
end baa come. Tou were Intoxicated,
Samuel you, a moral Example for the
town of Peterboro! 1 never suspected
It, owing to -the sassafras. 1 tbonght
you bad been bunted by a rocket, and
I've gone right along thanking Prov
idence for saving your life. But the
truth Is out now. Decelverr
The deacon started a start but sup
pressed It and cracked bis toe under
the table. Having taken bis pen In
hand. Henry wrote tbat one of bis
neighbor's cows bad dropped dead In
a fit a few days ago. He spelled It
fitt but the deacon obligingly took a
T off In the reading.
"Right along from the7 Fourth ef
July until this night, Samuel Dolby,
you have been deceiving me! I bave
told tbe neighbors tbat you might have
been struck by lightning or that it
might nave been a weak heart or that
you saw a ghost aa yon came by the
old sawmill. I bave told them this,
and yet 'tbey knew tbe true cause all
the time. Ob, Samnel, now could you

The deacon felt waves of patriotism
aweepiug over una at lue reuiem
bfance.' but he hune on to himself. He
! also remembered how cool and Dice
that beer tasted, but be dared not lick
bis lips.
"And tbe shame of It, Samuel, has
driv me to my grave. I can't bold up
my bead agMn It. 1 e'pose you'll be
come a pirate or something, but' I
can't help tbat They'll all under
stand why I committed suicide, and
they'll all pity me. It won't do you
any good to fall on your knees and
shed tears and ask me to forgive you."
The deacon didn't fall or shed.
Henry wrote tbat be kinder suspected
that turnips would go to 40 cents a
bushel before winter set in, but be
might be mistaken.
"Samuel, we bave a smokehouse,
We buve a bam In there smoking. I
am golug out there and shut myself
In wltb the bam until I smother to
death. I bare always felt tbat I'd
like to look purty after death, but I
don't care now. If I look like a smoked
bam you'll bave to put up wltb It I
guess it'll wasb off when 1 get up to
heaven. Samuel, farewellr'
It was a mournful word, but Samuel
was game. He cboked back bis emo
tions, swallowed the pumpkin seed be
was holding In bis mouth for rheums
tlsm and let his poor wife go to ber
smoking doom. He also read from tbe
letter tbat Henry thought It was go
ing to be a bard winter. He couldn't
tell why be thought so, but be did.

Dolby must be smoking by this time.
Ten minutes passed. She must' be

bis arms and stretched wltb a ho

bedroom and undressed and got Into
