CARRIED
BY
STORM
By F. A. MITCHEL.
tCoprrljM, IJr. by Anwrlcu Press
elation.
The Von Puttkauiers wcr one of the
most respectable families In Germany.
Iheir customs, tbelr manners, their
daii; oceuiwtiooa. were tbe same as
they had been several hundred years
before, when the first luttkamer was
permitted to preflx Von to bis name.
They llveJ on tbe family estate at
RelnfeW, arc In the morning at a
certain- hour, attended to their duties,
tousebold and social, during the day
and went to bed and to sleep at the
same hour every night Nothing had
ever occurred to disturb the serenity
of tbelr lives, and it did not occur to
any one of them, especially to Herr
Ton Puttkainer and his food wife, that
any disconcerting episode would ever
occur to tbeni.
But where younjt women are grow-'
lug up destined to become wives there
is always a skeleton in the family
closet The mother may realise that
pretty dnufihter will mate and leave
the family nest, but the father. If such
a thought comes luto his head, either
banishes It or considers It likely only
to happen In the far future. The time
came, as It must Inevitably come,
when the whole l'uttkatuer family
was startled as If by the shock of an
earthquake.
An application arrived from a young
flicer in the 1'russlan army fur per
mission to pay bis addresses to Johan
na Puttkamer. This was equivalent
to asking for ber hand. At first only
the horrible proposition to take away
one of tbe lambs was considered. Then
note was taken of tbe wolf who had
brokeu Into the fold. Who was be?
A Von, an officer, a member of an ex
cellent family. But with this tbe list
of recommendations ended. At the
university where he bad studied bis
wild ways had fastened upon him the
obriquet of "Mad." A big man. wKh
long legs, be strode through German
customs, trampling them at every step.
Be never did anything as any one else
would do It He had uo reverence, no
fear. He smoked big black cigars and
drank (asks of beer. Terrible as it
was to give up the maiden, it was ex
cruciating to risk ber happiness with
such a man.
A family conclave was called-that
la. a conclave among the older mem
bers. The applicant's position, talents,
habits, were discussed and testimony
regarding them taken. On tbe one
band was the young officer's family
and social states, on tbe otber his mad
pranks, bis contempt for established
forms. It was not deemed wise to posi
tively decline what might prove a
food match nor to accept what might
prove a very bad one. Better tempo
rice until an- acquaintance with tbe
suitor could be gained. Tbe Bnai deci
sion was to invite him te tbe family
domain and look him over. If he were
much in love, be would wait; if not
well, perhaps they would be well rid of
bim. So Herr von Puttkamer wrote
the young man permission to pay the
family a visit of Inspection. Just as a
church congregation permits a candi
date to preach them a sample sermon.
Word having reached be Puttkamer
borne of tbe bonr at wblcb tba suitor
would arrive, preparation was made
to receive Ulm according to tbe sacred
traditions of the first families of Ger-many-aunts
and uncles were Invited
to be present during the visit that the
benefit of their observations might be
obtained. He was to be permitted to
remain till some estimate of his prom
ise as a husband had been secured,
then to be sent away for further de
liberation, perhaps other visits and a
final decision, which would be com
municated to bim In due form.
Meanwhile tbe glri applied for de
murely waited for tbe result of all
this Investigation.
When the day came round and tbe
hour approached for the suitor's arriv
al the Puttkamer family and the old
est aud most trusted relations were
lined up tn receive him to protect the
lamb from any sudden dash of the
wolf Johanna was stationed In the
center of tbe group between ber fa
ther and mother, while the others ei
tended as wings on either side. A
clatter of horse's hoofs was heard
coming up the driveway at a gallop,
and a moment later a tall, lank young
man threw himself to the ground.
There stood the father and mother
glaring solemnly, between them tbe
blushing Johauna, with ber eyes cast
on the ground. Without a moment's
hesitation tbe lover ran forward, flung
bis arms around her, drew her tight
ly to his breast and covered her face
with kisses. Meanwhile tbe scandal
ized parents stood flushing Hgbtnlng
from their eyes at this annihilation of
all their pluns, all their precaution.
But the victory was with tbe young
man. who had carried the position by
Storm. It waa not long before the fa
ther and mother realized that tbe mat
ter was settled. What! Prevent their
daughter to remain uubetrotbed to tba
man who had embraced her! Never!
Tbe luspeetloo was ended at its be
ginning; tbe probation did not take
f lace. It was a settled fact that little
Johanna was to be given over to ber
lover though be were a monster. Be
fore be left Keinfeld tbe pair went
through the forms of betrothal.
Years after this triumph, with the
same whirlwind decision, tbe man who
made It achieved others Id a far dif
ferent field that of statesmanship and
diplomacy. For years be directed tbe
policy of tbe king of Prussia, he hum
bled that king's enemy, France, and
from the palace of Versailles proclaim
ed his chief emperor of Germany. His
name will be banded down among the
greatest of European statesmen. It
was Otto von Bismarck.
