It bad been an unusually oppressive
day even for August Every one
seemed sleepy or sleeping. Cobbler
slept with half mended boots In their
laps; Italian women slept at tbelr fruit
stands with sleeping babies at tbelr
breasts; homes trotted conscientiously
long to front of sleeping drivers.
In tbe department store where An
tona Wbeaton worked the day baa
been difficult, especially behind tbe
stuffy corner where she measured out
ribbons. Aod, oh, w hat a godsend tbe
loud sounding bell at U bad been! Most
of tbe girls In the store were city bred,
and tbey accepted tbe conditions of
August phllosopblaclly, but Antona
Wbeaton had come from a freeb little
country town In the west, and aa she
leaned from ber boarding bouse win
dowthe third floor hail room, back-
