Taul Beck, of Dilley, was an Ar
gus caller last Friday. In driving
down to Hillsboro, Mr. Btck en
countered the county steam roller
on the bridge near Wib. Hughes'
place, which frightened his team.
One of the horses reared op, and
became entangled in the bridge
railing, and fell upon its back.
The buggy tongue was broken, but
qo further damage resulted.

Leonard Hill, a young man of
Buxton, died last Thursday night,
of pneumonia, after a short illness
Thursday morning, he was thought
to be improving, but death came
euddenlv the following night
Young Hill was highly esteemed
in the Buxton neighborhood, and
had clerked for T. B. PerkinH for
some lime, prior to hiB illness. He
leaves a father, mother, two sisters
and brother, and was aged about

Professor Abdullah Alexis Ben
Kori, head of the department of
modern languages, r U , is et
gaged to give lectures at the Chau
Unqua Assembly, Gladstone, Ore
during the month of July on sub
jfcta connected with Assyria and
the Orient. Professor Kori is
native of Assyria and was reared
in a monastery in the Far East
He is a graduate of the Patriarchs
College, Ain Traz, Beirut, and
Greek Pontifical College, Rome,
and converses fluently in six differ
ent languages, besides having
thorough knowledge of Greek and
Latin.
The law creating two judicial de
partmentsin this district went into
effect last Monday. The depart
merits will be known as No. 1 and
No. 2 Department No. 1 is the
civil term, while No. 2 is for the
trial of criminal caBes. The nex
rfgular term is on the 19th
July. Another Judge was be ap
pointed this week, and according
to the law, must come from either
Columbia or Clatsop county, and
the appointment fell to Judge Jas
ft. h,akin. of Clatsop county. Mr
Eakin is a brother of Justice Robt
Eakin, of the Supreme Court. He
was born in Chicago 49 years ago.

ter he graduated from the Boston
Law School and returned to Aetor
ia, where he has been in practice
continually for the past 12 years
He was admitted to the bar in Ore
gon, October 14, 1887.

The president aald, "What can I do
for you?"
Clem aald, "Mr. President, 1 wUh to

West Point"
But why," said the president, "do
you not take the examination V
"I did, Mr. President, but I failed to
pass.
"That was unfortunate," aald tha
president "How was that?"
Why, Mr. President, you see, I was
In the war, and while I waa there thoe
other boy of my age were in acbool."
"What."' su!d the president amazed.
You were In the war?"
Clem waa then scarcely eighteen and
boyhih looking.
"Yes, Mr. President, I was In the
war four years." And he related his
experience. '
The president then wrote something,
sealed It and, handing It to Clem, said:
"Take this to the secretary of war.
I guess It will fit you all right"
Clem went to the secretary, to whom
he had already applied, and waa re
ceived somewhat coldly. He delivered
the note. The secretary read It and
luld:
"Iw you know what this ls7"
"No," said Clem, "but I supposed It
was an order to admit me to West
Point."
"Well, It Isn't," aald the secretary.
"It's an order to communion you sec
ond lieutenant In the regular artny."

General Hooker probably had the fin
est looking horse In the Union armies.
Tills was Lookout, a horse of rleh chest
nut color, standing seventeen bands
hlxb and possessing all the dulnty and
elastic nction of the most delicately
fashioned colt. This was the horse,
Kentucky bred, which bore Hooker
during the "battle above the clouds."
The borne was Intended for exhibition
In Kngland, but got no farther than
New York, where Hooker bought him,
although having to compete with the
agent of the emperor of France, who
wanted him for his majesty Louis Na

At the battle of Charleston, Mo., In
August, 1801, Llcutennnt Colonel Kan
sorn of the Eleventh Illinois was urging
his men to the charge when an officer
