Formerly, uoder the old regime,
and before the initiative and refer
endum aod the direct primary were
tecured, the corporations dictated
the legislation at ?Jem, and the
party "bosW were all powerful.
Then the grange was on the de
fensive, now it ie the lt-adit g ag
gressive force in Oregon politxe
Having started in as a champior
of the agricultural classes, it hu
widened the scope of its ueefulnt sa,
and now stands for the general
bst interests of the commonwealth
It was formerly customary to sneer
at the "grangers," but that body
his created respect for itself b)
standing squarely for the best in
terests of the people. With it
8,000 votes, it practically holds th
balance of power in Oregon politics
and the gracge never hesitates to
vote independently for the best
men and measures.
Since the Independent (in nam
only) it doesn't dare tJ open iu
b-jad on politics for fear cf offend
ing somebody was lambasted by
the Forest Grove papers for tutting
in where it had no business, it has
been itching for a 6ciap with the
Argus, and on several occasions
has shown symptoms of being
''wormy." It ought to take a dost
of some of the numerous patent
medicines it is advertising on iu
"patent ineides."
It is understood that our "windy"
local contemporary will soon tab
oat letters patent on his discovery
of the '"necessity" for a seweragt
eyetem in Hillsboro, and wi 1 then
seek to restrain the Argus from
mentioning the subject. The Ar
gus hopes to be able to mollify its
petulant brother by the gift of a
tin rattle and a big stick of striped
confectionery.

lie stopped and leaned upon a neat
fence. Within were spacious and
highly cultivated grounds. Directly
before him was a flower garden partly
hidden by H41 elumps of low trees.
He was a flower lover. He coveted
especially some beautiful Jacqueminot
roses he saw within. Surely the own
er of the place would not grudge him
one or two. The house stood back
within a grove. No one was about.
He felt again the glow of boyhood In
stolen fruit. To bis right was a gate
not the main gate a little one for side
' untrance. He went and stood by the
gate nnd looked and fell before temp
tation. With a quickly beating heart
he opened it. stepped briskly In, picked
u rose and was about to retire when
he saw a bed of American Beauties
losing themselves In a leafy recess. It
occurred to Lira to gain the recess be
fore doing, any more stealing. Hur
rying Into it, he ran up against a girl
sitting on a rustic bench with a lapful
of roses. She uttered an exclamation
of sudden fright.
"Pardon me," be said. "I I"
