Perdue, told Hher- ill Hancock, Monday, that be thought be would recognize the name of the town in North Caro lina, if he should see it on tbe map. The sheriff procured a map giving all the small townB of that state, and Johnson pored over it during the following evening. Tuesday morning he told tbe sheriff that be was now sure that Perdue hailed from Sparta, North Carolina. He is also sure that the county from which Perdue came was Allegbaov. Sherifl Hancock has written to the sher ill' of that county, making inqui ries Mrs. Johnson,' of Lents, and a married daushter. from Portland, visited Johnson yester- lay alternoon. Botb ol tbe visi tors were greatly affected, and emerged from the jiil with tear stained eyes. For tbe first time since his arrest, Johnson broke down and wept bitterly, when he taw his mother and eiBler. SOME HINTS ON DAIRYING Fred Schomberg, one of the best P'mteil dairymen in the Btate, and who has done much, in connection with others, to advance the dairy interests of Washington county, made the statement one day this week, "that 20 per cent of the av erage dairyman's yearly milk out put is lost, by not properly caring lor tbe milk, between the dairy and tbe condenser. In other words, the loss is due to a failure to prop erly cool tbe milk at tbe dairy, and to keep it cool en route to tbe con denser. He states that aB soon as the milk is taken from tbe cow's udder, the can containing it should be placed in water, and the milk shoald be stirred until it reaches a temperature of GO degrees. In transporting it to tbe condenser, tbe cans Bhould be covered with wet sacks during hot weather, when the temperature is above 70 de grees. Nor Bhould it stand ex posed in cans when the tempera ture is above (10 degrees, winter or summer. A drop of milk, magni fied (iiiO times, plainly shows tbe butter fit cells. Accidity iu milk increasee after leaving tbe cow, and the cooling process checks the above tendency. Accidity weakens the butter fat cells, and a sample taken with the eample taker, causes the granules of butter fat to slip off the taker, and thus reduces the value of the test by which the whole amount of milk is judged. That is why many people do not understand the variation in milk tPStS." WILLIAM BEAGLE Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Imbrie, of this city, receivetl word Wednesday of tbe death of their brotber-io-law, Wm.
