A McKtNNET
The Argus, according to an old
time honored custom, wishes it
readers a UanriY New Year. It
hopes to see old Washington coun
ty advance many more steps this
year, in genuine prosperity. But
the people must make their future
prosperity by developing the coun
ty's splendid resources. The Argus
hopes to see many new apple and
walnut orchards planted in this
county during the year. It hopee
to see a big cheese factory; and an
electric railway out from Portland
It hopes to see more alfalfa sown
and more experiments with sum
ner irrigation, wherever it is prac
ticable. In fact, it desires to see
Washington county the banner
fruit county of the state, as it now
is the leading dairy county of the
state.
The New Year's edition of the
Daily Oregontan was a good num
ber. A full page illustration of an
Oregon orchard, in harvest time
shows that it had not forgotten one
of the coming industries of the
etate. Its other features were al
fine, fro'm a descriptive and etatis
tical standpoint. Its illustrations
were timely and up-to-date. Al
in all, it is a number which Ore-
gouians can send to friends in the
East with a sense of pride and
satisfaction.
8. A. D. Puter, the land fraud
man, has been pardoned by the
President, at the solicitation of Mr
Heney. He will be used as a gov
ernment witness in the prosecution
of untried cases, and it was for that
purpose that he was pardoned.
Mr. Heney, who ia now in Wash
ington, says the Oregon land fraud
trials will begin, positively, when
he returns to Portland on ths 13th
, if January. That 13th will be an
unlucky day for somebody.
Senator Fulton came to Oregon
this week, to register, and will re
turn to Washington when he has
attended to that matter.
