ImbchI Kverj ThrUj -BT- GtlLD McKINNET Tiis Oregonian, after years of party ssmoa, hss at last cut tUe cord that binds, and is no longer a rt niwr. It announce that it f j i r will hereafter be independent. The Oregonian haa a nht to nil anj fisld it chooses. IU editor, U. 8oott, ia today the ableet writer in the United State, add the cnti cism ha ia now receiving from cer tain republican papers, ia in some cases both intemperate and unmet The writer haa not always agreed with Mr. Soott'a Tiews on certain political questions, but has at all timea been forced to recogoixs the editor's splendid ability, and gives his paper credit for its great wort in assisting to develop tbe norm west. As ft republican paper the Argus haa no sympathy with the trust wing of the party. It nope to support Theodore Roosevelt on an anti-trust platform, and be lieves the Oregonian, as an inde nendent journal, will 1 found leading the republican anti trust fight on this Coast. On Monday next, business wil resume ita old channels without legal restrictions. The people are ready for it, and pleased to get out from under the holiday lid. Tbe business of the country, generally is good. In Oregon there are no hard times. Farmers and busineee men are practically out of debt Crops nave been good this year, and prices have been equally good. There is much yet in the country to be sold, and prices have not suf fered by the financial scare, so, really, there is no cause for any thing but an optimistic outlook in any direction. The lime formes on banks has gone by. There is now no occasion, nor has there been, at any time since the scare. All that ia needed just now is the exercise of good common sense. If tbe people nee the right judgment, business wHl soon be in its usua healthy condition, and here in Oregon we will hardly know that we have passed through a prosper ity panic. Certain of tbe republicans of Multnomah county want a date convention before tbe primaries , while Chairman Westgate thinks the convention hould be held af ter the primariee. It is not known how tbe matter will be decided, but in any event there will be a re publican state convention, as there seems to be a popular demand for the maintatnance of this feature. At the primariee candidates will be nominated for Supreme Judge, Dairy and Food Commissioner, two Railroad Commissioners, United States Senator, two Repre sentatives in Congress, several Cir cuit Judges, numerous Proeecuting Attorneys, 60 members of the State House of Representatives and fif teen members of the State Senate, and for county offices. Butter is quoted ia Portlaud at 85 cents a roll. We will soon all be obliged to take off our bats to tbe cow, and science will be forced to invent something to take the place of butter as an article of ev ery day food. The butter trust is fat aoS greasy, but the farmer who feeds the cow, doesn't get bis pro portionate divvy ana that is s what's the matter. A subter ranean passage, now blocked up, runs from tbe basement to the ruins of the monastery, a distance of about 200 yards.
