Chief Engineer L. B. Wickerebam
of the United Railway Interurban
Line, which has a large amount of
track laid in Portland, cave out
the following interview to a Port
land paper on Thursday last:
"Construction of the Vnited Railwavs'
interurban lines will be pushed through
to Hillsboro st once. The steel is arriv
ing, a Urge supply of ties is on hand, and
nothing but the worst kind of weather
will stop winter work on this project
The company is financed and will go
ahead with its entire project, regardless
of financial conditions, iust as soon as its
amended franchise is finally disposed of
bv the council, so that tt can get the use
of the few blocks remaining necessary to
make connection with its private right-
of-way outside of the city limits."
We will push out interurban lines.
The route to Hillsboro will be decided
upon in the immediate future. We have
three lines located and completely sur
veyed, and some rights of way secured.
The maximum grade is J S per cent, and
in but few places does the grade exceed
one per cent. The length of the Hills
boro line will be practically twenty-three
miles."

Dr. F. J. Bailey and wife, of this
city, have taken apartments at the
Hobart-Curtis, Portland, for the
winter, and the doctor will open
offices in that city, and make a
specialty of abdominal surgery, co
operating with some of the best
surgeons of the metropolis. Dr.
Bailey was surgeon in the United
States Army, and saw service in
the Philippines, and is regarded as
a skillful operator.

Last Saturday the 5-year-old
son of Thomas Williams, of this
city, while hammering on a steel
wedge, dislodged a sliver of steel
which struck the little fellow on
the lid ol one of bis eyes, and pene
trated to the eye ball, but fortun
ately not entering it. Dr. F.J.
Bailey was called, and removed the
sliver. This is the second accident
of the kind which has happened
'near Hillsboro recently
James W. Henderson, who lives
on tract adjoining Hillsboro, put
ia an aore of alfalfa, last May, for
winter pasturage, which now looks
first rate. The land is not irrigated,
and there are a number of farmers
here who are watching to see how
the forage will stand the winter,
The only fear is that alfalfa on un-
drained land will get drowned out
during the winter months. Geo.
R. Baglsy is experimenting with
alfalfa on the Dudley ranch, but
this land is irrigable in the sum
mer time, and bat betn subsoiled,
besides having good natural drain
age. The Bsgleys will add ten
acres to the crop each year until
they get a total of sixty acres un
