At the nominating mass meeting
beld ia th'ti city, to average of
150 votes waa cast at each ballot,
showing that the people believe in
coming out in the open and settling
the matter of their choice of candi
dates. The men selected are good,
representative men of the town,
and eeverallT pledged themselves
to work for the beet interests of the
city. It ia a thankless jab at beet
Bat it is a good sign for progression
when representative men of the
town are placed in nomination for
the several municipal positions of
trust, and who signify their inten
lion to do their best. A large ma
jority of the legal voters of the
city selected the standard bearers
for the neit year, in an open con
test, and the will of the majority
should be ratified at the polls on
next Mondsy.

The eastern bankers are begin
niog to pay their balances to the
western banks, and if this had been
dons at the beginning, there would
have been no "rich man's panic"on
this coast Conditions are getting
better all the time. Many e&stern
banks are doing business without
restrictions of any kind, and the
whole financial horizon is taking
on a rosier hue. When the wheat
crop is moved in the Northwest,
everything will be all right in Ore
gon. But of one thing ws are as
sured the umbilical cord between
the great West and Wall Street
has not been severed, as many sup
posed. Most of us are wiser, now
Wall street brokers offer a pre-
mium of 2 per cent, for gold not
yet arrived from Europe. They can
afford to pay that price for the pur
pose of speculating in cheap seeuri
ties, caused by a scarcity of gold
The fellows who have gold hoarded
np will reap a rich harvest off the
poor business men. In fact that is
why just such money stringencies
as the present one are created. The
big fish ever devoured the little
ones.

The time to bring up campaign
issues, in city election, is at a mass
meeting, is that all mar be ad'
vised, and vote accordingly. When
this is dons, there should be no ef
fort to stir up bad feeling and strife
among the citizenship. City pol
itice is often taken too seriously,
and bad feeling engendered, where
it is not necessary.
This week is another big holiday,
according to the Governor. It is
currently reported that the holi
days will be extended to the first
of the year. There are also rumors
of a special session of the Oregon
legislature.
The Japanese have invited this
government to send its Pacific fleet
over to that country on a friendly
visit. They might repeat the story
of the Maine on a larger scale.
