Miss Marie Tunxat, a stenogra
pher with Bagley 4 Hare, will visit
with friends and relatives at Port
land and St. Jobu for the next
week or two.
A number of farmers were in the
city, Saturday, receiving fruit
trees. Many of the best varieties
of apple trees are being set out in
this vicinity this week.
Saturday was a lively one in the
city. The town was full of people,
from all points of the compass, tra
ding, and attending to business
The stores were crowded all day.

John D Thomas, a well known
Hillsboro boy, who is attending
the National Law School at Wash
ington, D. C , has made applica
tion to become a Federal land
clerk under the civil service rules.
John Kamna and wife, of Far-
mington, were agreeably surprised
last Friday night by an inrush ol
friends and neighbors, who pro
ceeded to help them celebrate their
loth wedding anniversary in a
most pleasant manner.
Willis Waggener, of Njebrook,
Lincoln county, was in town Mon
day and Tuesday, the guest of bis
brother, Kufus Waggener, of the
Tualatin Hotel. Willis bad in his
pofsession some of the finest New
port agates the writer has ever
seen. He says the early spring is
the best time to find good agates,
as the tides are higher and the
agate beds are more apt to be un
covered at suoh a time.

. John Fisher and wife, of near
West Union, were in town Satur
day. John bought a new farm
near West Union, some time ago,
and while cleaning up around the
place he found an old German bi
ble, which he purposes to exhibit at
the next Hillsboro fair. John 1b
reading the same diligently of late,
and has got along at) far as the
seventh book of Moses, and is so
interested about the Jews that he
doesn't hear his wife call him to
upper more than half the time.
Cbas. Schmidt, a German resi
dent of near Phillips, aged about
eighty years, met with a peculiar
accident last Saturday, while work
ing on bis ranob, about a half mile
from his bouse. He cut down a
mall tree on the bank of Rock
creek, when the tree kicked back
the butt of the same, catching the
old gentleman on the right leg,
breaking both bones below the
knee, causing what is known as a
compound fracture. The wound
was a bad one, the bones protrud
ing from it. Mr. Schmidt called
for help, for some time, without re
ceiving any, when he started to
hiB bouse. He finally reached the
road in front of his house, when he
attracted the attention of some
E&mra by, and wag assisted to his
ome. Dr. Tamiesie was called to
attend the old gentleman's injuries,
and inleM other complications
should ensue, he will recover.
