Governor CbmWUin hJ
heart to heart Ulk with State
Treasurer Steele the other day, and
told him that he would have to
make good for every cent of the
state' money, and that if he, the
governor, found that Steele had vi
olated the law, in depositing school
money in the Portland bank that
failed, he would begin a criminal
prosecution. Evidently, the Gov'
ernor would have no other course
open to him. If Steele has been
guilty of wrong, he ought to be
held to account the same as any
other humble custodian of school
funds, who makes a misuse of hie
official position.

The California legislature will
meet soon in special session.
bill will be presented extending the
time for paying taxes, also pro-
visions for allowing courts to pro
ceed on legal holidays. The rea
son, or the principal one, advanced
by the Governor, for calling a
special session is, that the CaliforJ
nia banks are unable to get the
balances due them from Eastern
banks. This with the withdrawal
f money from the state banks, and
the hoarding of it, has depleted the
cash reserve.
It is probable that there will be
more land cleared up in Washing
ton County this winter than for
many winters past, as there are
many men now anxious to go to
work at that kind of labor. Wood
cutting will also be revived, with
the result that cord wood will be
cheaper to the consumer.
The market reports say that but
ter will advance soon. Butter is
one of the things that cannot be
downed by a money stringency
but it creates a money stringency
in the pocket of the fellow who has
to buy it. .
Secretary Cortelyou is said to be
angry at the Eastern bankers, for
their unwillingness to help the
West. The Eastern bankers won
even pay back to the Western
banks what they owe.
John Pape, of Sherwood, was in
the city today.
John Schaer, of near Mountain
dale, called on the Argue today
John Overroeder, of Reedville,
was in town today, and called.

Smith over Sunday.

and Mr. Fleiecbauer, of Portland
were guests of the Misses Connel
of this city, over Sunday.
Mark Tracy, a' saloon man, south
of the railroad track, at Cornelius,
saei with gasoline explosion, the
first of the week, that came near
burning np his place. The electric
lights in his place of business went
out, and Tracy lighted a gasoline
lamp, when the explosion occurred
Besides burning Tracy's hands and
a foot, the wall paper caught fire,
and, but for prompt assistance, the
building and contents would have
been destroyed. Home of the fix
tures were damaged by the fire
John Vanderwal went down today
