8. P. Rwder, of RwAMlle, In
town, Tuesday, and ii Ulkiog of
taking up a homestead between
here and the coant. Homesteads,
br the way, are setting mighty
ecarce that is to eay, good onee.
The are many claims to be taken,
however, in the burnt districts, be
tween this place and the coast, but
they are not considered very desir
able by Oregonians, although East
erners come out here and clear up
the land, and often make comfort
able home. The soil is good; there
is little doubt of that, as it grows
fine vegetables, and splendid fruit,
and the time will come when the
entire present waste of burned tim
ber laod will be reclaimed, and in
habited by a thrifty and prosperous
people. But the hard part is the
clearing of the dead timber, which
is a task the average Oregonian
turns down with both hands.
Washington Grange, of Pump
kin Ridge, we are told, had a most
interesting exhibit at their meeting
last week, which assumed the pro
portions of a small fair. The die
ilay of vegetables, prunes and
other fruit, was highly creditable to
the Orange. Mr. Kelly showed the
products of the Eastern black and
Australian black walnuts, and the
improved butternut which, were
equal to the best grown anywhere
V. R. Harris, county fruit inspec
tor, was preeen, and made a talk
en the value ot spraying and clean
ing up old orchards, and is loud in
his praise of the people of that seo
tion, in exhibiting their products,
and in the interest taken in good
farming and orchard work
A number of seeders have been
taken to the country from this
place the last few days, which in
dicates that fall grain is being put
in the ground. There is still con
siderable grain grown in Washing
tan county, despite the dairy, fruit
and other interests, which of late
years have turned the attention oi
the farmere to diversified farming
Oats pay even better than wheat,
as more bushels per acre can be
raised. No soil in Oregon can
produce finer oats than that of this
county. There is a big demand for
Oregon white oats on thia caaet for
milling purposes, and raisers al
ways gets a good price.
We have mentioned it before,
bat we want to emphasize the
statement, that the Willamette
Valley will prove to be a great corn
country. Only the other day we
saw specimens of field sweet corn,
which were as fully matured as
anv we ever saw in the great corn
belt of the Mississippi valley, and
as to size, they compared favorably
with the Eastern product. Corn is
a profitable crop in this state any
way one looks at it. It ought to
be more of a general crop, as when
tbe right kinds are planted, the
beet results are sure to follow
F. E. Huntsicger, of this place,
met with an accident, Saturday,
which will lay him up for some
weeks. While assisting to load
ties at the Southern Pacific depot,
for Tompkins, bis right foot was
caught under a timber and badly
crushed. His icjuries were attend
ed to by Dr. A. B. Bailey. Mr.
Huotsinger is now a firm believer
in accident insurance. He bad
taken out an accident policy in Oc
tober, and will draw down enough
for expenses while he is taking hie
enforced vacation.
I am now prepared to show you
the Cbae. Stevens & Bros, eamples
of new Fail and Winter styles in
Ladies' and Misees' dress suits,
shirt waist suits, and drees skirts,
made to your special order,
and of your own selection of
goods. Fall and Winter coats
also carried. I carry a standard
line of corsets and underskirts. I
will be glad to bring my goods to
jour house upon request. Inde

Burke Tongue, of thia city, ex
hibited two of his fine animals at
the Portland Horse Show, to-wit:
Portia Knight and Oregon Kid,
both of which attracted well de
eerved attention. The Horse Show
was a success, and as it was the
first of tbe kind ever held in the
metropolis, succeeding ones will in
all probability be even more suc
cessful. Experienced milker and good
farm hand wants job on farm or
dairy. Can milk from 20 to 50

C. B. Montgomery, c! Galesburg,

W. G. Hare. Mr. Montgomery was
