THE PANIC SLANDERER
It is reported that the failure of the
Merchants National Bank, of Port
land, is mainly due to the effect of
malicious falsehoods regarding its
solvency. There is a ckse of peo
ple in this world, who delight to be
vicious, and who appear to take a
fiendish delight in "getting even."
by lying about those against whom
they happen to have a real or fan
cied grievance. Such work is con
lemptible, and will in due time
react against the small mind that
conceived and uttered it. Ae a rule
the utterers of business slander are
irresponsible, morally and other
wise, and it usually happena that
in the course of time they are paid
in their own coin, by misfortune
of their own. The man who goes
about uttering alander about his
bocinees competitor, in times like
theee, or at any time, is in email
business. This is a time when all
business interests should stand to
gether, for the general rood. No
c? ff w
business man can afford to be inde
pendent of his fellows; in fact, the
time may come when he will per
sonally need the help oi the very
ones whom he seeks to discredit by
inuendo, or other form of slander

Th. Indian's Reply.
A distinguished army otlicer tells a
story ou himself which relates to the
days when he was a young lieutenant
iu the far west a good many years ago.
He was of a party w ho had gone to
see the ludiaus at Spokane Tails.
Among the redskins was i hlef Moses,
who was fairly well educated and
spoke capital English. The youug lieu
tenant addressed Chief Moses In the
Indian tongue, saylug. -Moses. I have
oftea beard of you. and I have seen
your picture and your name In the
newspaper, but I have never before
seen you." and. offering bis band, add
ed. "I am g'ad to meet you." Moses
canned hisn from bead to foot, and
as the young mau stood with out
stretched hand the lengthening silence
and stolidity of the chief were beeom
lng painful, when old Moses at last
aud with great deliberation said In
English, "loung man, I have never
heard of you before and I have never
seen your picture lu the newsp:ivr,

am glad to see you," and accepted bis

A correspondent writes to afk
this paper, why it would not be ad
visable for the government to issue
a billion or so of the old Abe Lin
coln, "good for all demands, both
public and private,'' greenbacks, to
be loaned to the people on right se
curity, daring times of money
stringency. The correspondent rea
sons that if a coterie of bankers in
each city can issue clearing house
paper money inat is good lor gener
al use, why cannot the government
issue billion or two of greenbacks,
based on the faith and credit of the
whole government. The only an
swer we can give is that we are nn
der the sold standard, which does
not permit the issuance of green
backs.

Real Forbidden Fruit.
In some countries there grows a
kind of fruit belonging to the shaddock
family and which Is commonly called
"forbidden fruit." It is shnjlar to
grape fmlt, but U larger, and the Inside
Is somewhat coarter than the delicious
acid delicacy of which we are so fond.
The name forbidden fruit was given
on account of three dark brown stains,
like finger marks, which invariably
show on this Tarlety of the shaddock.
The stains are close together on cue
side and are believed to be the marks
of Eve'a fingers left as a brand on
the apple whose eating caused so much
trouble la the world. Forbidden fmlt
Is much liked by people who are able
to get It fresh, but so far It has not
been shipped abroad as extensively as
Its couslas, the grape fmlt and shad
dock. New York Herald.
Executrix' Notice
Morgan, Rockefeller, Hill and
others, after precipitating a big
financial scare, have succeeded in
freezing the small stock holders
out of their holdings, and are now
ready for the restoration of "confi
dence." They also sought to show
the President, as well as the people,
that the money power can bring on
a panic whenever it chooses. They
will now demonstrate how the big
interest i can stop a panic, when it
has gone far enough to suit their
purposes. The panic is now over.
The Governor of California has
issued a call for a special session ol
the California legislature, in view
of the financial scare. There are
people in Oregon, who think a spe
cial session of the Oregon legisla
ture might do good at this particu
lar time. One thing iB evident; the
people are becoming tired of the
holiday lid.'
