Many re the predictions relative
to the ncir street planking on the
city's streets, because of the fact
that a few inches o( earth have been
thrown upon the plank surface.
There are thoee who prophesy very
short life for the roadway, while
others swear you can pull their
toe nails out with red hot pincers if
the planking doesn t last longer
than exposed plank roadway. J
W.bbute is one oi the believers in
earth covering, and contends that
the county should do likewise in
lew of its bad plaoes.
The travelling has is a distinct
species, in a claw by biuifelf. He
usually is found occupying two
eats in a car, one for bis feet and
one for that part of his anatomy
that does the downsitting. The
hog never gives up bis extra sea',
unless compelled to, and then un
graciously. He will allow an old
man or an old lady to stand up in
the aisle of a car, within touching
distance, and never once offer to
remove his worthless carcass, and
share his seat.

land, and Minnie E. Mobr, of
Hillsboro,- J. W. Tourneau and
Tennie A. Newman, both of Sher

jonn k. liefgie and wile, nee
Alma Willie, formerly ot Hillsboro,
were in the city the fore part ot
this week, guests of W. N. Barrett
and wife. Mr. Beegle hs been in
Alaska for more than ten years
past, where he now holds the posi
tion of Deputy Collector of Cus
toms at Ketehikan. John Willis,
well known in Hillsboro, is Special
Deputy Collector of Customs at
Juneau, Alaska, with a salary of
$2500 a year.
County Treasurer Jackson thinks
the disbursements for October will
run from 140,000 to $45,000, before
the end of the month. The state
tax, which is due on the 31st inet..
will amount to $15,426.25, and of
the sum apportioned for schools by
the County School Superintendent,
15.UUU have already been paid
out. October and April are monthB
when the drain upon the county
treasury is always heaviest.

There are now nine charges at
the county poor farm, which is
about an average of the number of
persons kept at the county's ex
pense, for the past three or four
years.
J. J. Goebel, of above Laurel, and
who lives but a few hundred yards
from Bald Peak, Chehalem Moun
tain, one of Washington county's
scenic points, was in town Tuesday,
Urn. Lyda, whose Bellingher
.Bridge sawmill recently burned,
was in town Saturday evening
and says he is convinced that the
fire was of incendiary origin.
Rev. Wm. Graf and family, of
startup, Washington, were in
Hillsboro, Monday, on legal busi
ness. Mr. Graf formerly lived at
Bethany.
Mrs. O. L. Curtis, of Forest
Grove, spent some time last week,
visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
L A. Kood, of this city.
The many friends of J. Fuegy,
or runups, will regret to learn that
he is quite ill with a complication
of ailments.
Isaac Leisy and wife, of Port
land, were in town Monday, having
just returned from an extended trip
to Idaho.
Mrs. M. J. Sammons, of Cedar
Mill, was in town Tuesday, the
guest of Mrs. L A. Long.
J. B Tamiesie, of North Plains,
and who expects to quit farming,
waB an Argus caller Tuesday.
Whitney BoiBe, a well known
Portland attorney, was in the city
Monday, on probate business.
Born, to the wife of Thomas
Bowe, at Phillips, Ore , October 21,
1907, a daughter.
8. H. Powers and wife, of Corne
lius, had business at the county
eat Monday.
R. L. Greear left Monday for a
few days' visit to friends at Hood
River.
John Hay and wife, of Tacoma,
Wash., and Mrs. J. C. Hare, of
Portland, were in the city Saturday.
Hillsboro's population,city limits
and immediately adjoining suburbs
is now estimated at 2,300.
