tion has given notice of its inten
tion to test the Initiative nd Rel
mndurn law of thii sUte. Two
California attorneys have been em
ployed to bring the suit, wbich has
been duly filed in the United States
Circuit Court at Portland. The
obieet of the promoters of the suit
vidAntlv. is to eet the case before
the United States Supreme Court,
and thus, they no doubt hope, get
it knocked out. The San Francis
ce lawyers allege in their com
plaint that the law is unconstitu
tional, but the people of the state
of Oregon want it to remain a law,
for the very reason the corporations
want to get rid of it.

A Columbia county man has
brought suit againBt the Southern
Pacific Company to compel it to
ell to him 160 acres of land sc
cording to the terms of the old 0
& C. land grant. The suit has
been filed in the Federal Court at
Portland. Much interest will at
tach to the case, as there are hun
dreds of squatters on the com
pany's lands in this state.
Mr. Kay, a hold over State Sena
tor, has seized opportunity by the
tail, and declared himself a cacdi
date for President of the next State
senate. Mr. Kay is from Salem,
and. evidently believes in the old
adage that "the early bird" has the
beet chance at the matutinal worm
