Heroic Work Save Other Hop House
and Barn
W. J. Gregg, who lives 2 miles
northwest of Hillaboro, lost his
large hop housetbis forenoon, fire
breaking out on the ground floor,
at about 'J o'clock, it is thought
from the etove. Mr. Gregg and a
number of men near by, endeavor
ed to put out the blaze immediate
ly after it started, but the hops
burned like tinder, and soon the
whole building was a seething
mass of flames. It waa soon evi
dent that the work on hand was to
save the small hop bouse and a
barn, which stood near, and fully
a huodred hop pickers and neigh
bor set themselves to the tae k
Water was thrown upon the roofs
and eidi of the buildings, which
were eventually saved. The fire
scorched a few nearby hops in the
yard, and ran over an aojocect
held, besides burning up some
cordwood. The third floor was put
on last night, which with the crop
dried since Monday, was totally
destroyed. The building wa just
completed a few weeks before the
season begun, at a cot of about
HKI, and the loe?, including bops,
