Min Oarstair was not so old or so
sophisticated that she was dead to the
delights of having three tmuehes of
violets, two boxes of candy and a bull-
die of magazines piled up on the seat
neit to ber. Seemingly uuconsclo'.is of
the glaiuvs that bad followed tier its
she came lu, she nevertheless seated
herself In ber chair with the feeling
that alio was a iH.rK)!i of importance
and one whose popularity win evi

go!u away gifts.
As If the godn had net been good

Mars l on eyed it jealouly.
"Such a display of money," ho criti

It's beautiful," Miss far lair as
sured blm.
'Oh, well, my violets won't Imve a
ha nee uow," but it was a question
rather than an assertion, and Miss Car
stairs said, "How do you Wuowi" And
that was eucourageuieut, or would
have beeu from anybody but Miss c'ar
stalrs. 'I've half a mind to go on with you
to laytoun," Marston hesitated, and
Miss Carstalrt mid "Oh, do:" aud
that settled It. Marston went to Cud
the couductor and get a chair, aud u
there wasu't any but the one next to
Helen the porter lifted the bunches
of violets and the two boxes of candy

the end of the ear and piled them where
the passengers eyed Uiein aud then
serewed their necks to not a better
view of Miss Carstnlrs. all of which
that young lady enjoyed an much as
she enjoyed the distinction of having
Itichard Marston for a traveling com
panion.
'Think of uiy hobnobbing with a
celebrity," she said.
" 'Of the making of book a there Is no
end'" Marston quoted sententi.iusly.
"Think rather of my traveling with n
beauty."
"And both of -us 11s poor an poor,"
Helen sighed.
Marston looked at her. "I wonder
why you say that?" he atkpd. "What
difference does It make"
Helen stared at him. ' I thought"
she guKped.
"That I wonted to marry you," hi)
finished for her. "But I don't!" mid
he settled back In bin chair and looked
out toward the lino of the tropical
shore, where a few cocoanut palmn
were silhouetted agaliiHt a purple ea,
"Oh!' Helen's smise of iuiportuuco
bad departed. Suddenly uLe felt Im
measurably insignificant, but thid feel
ing was succeeded by one of Intense
Indignation.
"Of all things!" she ejaculated.
"Well, I know It's unusual for a man
to withdraw a proposition of that kind
In ten minutes, and I know I said Home

train left, but I've changed my nilud.
It's usually a woman's prerogative,"
was his eusy way of getting out of It,
"but this time It's a man's, and I've
changed my mind."
For the first time In ber life Misn
Cartatn could not meet the Hituation.
She simply sat there with her cheeks
burning and hated him.
Curiosity getting the belter of ber,
however, she asked:
"But why?"
"That thing," Marston said succinct
ly and nodded toward the hamper. "To
think you could taka a thing like that
from Deerhig!"
Miss Curslalrs felt letter. She could
meet jealousy.
"But I couldn't help it, could I?"
was her Innocent query. "I couldn't
tell the porter to drop the basket on the
platform."
"But I was bo sure you had turned
him down," Marston complained, "pos
itively, you know over at the Break
era last night, after the dance."
"I tried to--"
"And couldn't?"
Hit nodded.
Too many Inducements? (Vmntry
house, town house, trips to L'yope,
diamonds O Lord?" Marston groaned
aa be finished the catalogue.
".No." She turned from lilm to a con
templation of the Beeiiery, and for a
time they rode in silence, pacing be
yond the long line of palms to the or
ange groves brilliant stretches of yel
low and green that tilled the car with
the fragrance of wedding bouquets.
Suddenly Marston (lung out, "Whut
was it that kept you from turning him
down positively, Helen?"
Bhe leaned forward and spoke with
conviction,
"I might da worse than marry Deer
'"A p.irk packer."
'it' better to marry a pork packwr

formed blm.
Mars-ton tiled ber with a stem eyt.
"I toll you right uow. Helen." he
said, "that I won't run this rao lu
competition wtih IKerlng. I don't trot
lu the same clusi. You can live hliu
up or gio me up."
Helen re:ielul over and touched the
electric bell. "Will you bring m some
telegraph blanks?" she said to the por
ter w hen he emu.
"And now will you lend me a peu
cil':" she asked Marntou as she tlut
teivd the leaves of the yellow pad.
"What are you golug to do?" Mantou
1,1: .tinned as he handed It to her.
"1 am K-'hm to telegraph to tsui'tug,"
s'ie said. "I told him that I would
.v 'yet' or 'no' by telegraph."
Marshal went white.
' IK.ii't do anything rash, Helen." he
warned.
i .-hall do its I please." said Miss
Curst.iirs. aud he leaned back aud
ripped out, "Oh. of course."
She sat with the peuell poised. "I
wNh you'd tvksit a peuny for me." she
said at last. "Heads I do It -tails 1
de.i't."
"I will do nothing of the klud."
"Oh. well. 'ou't!" She scribbled a
hasty word and reached for the bell.
But Marston stopped ber. "What have
you written?" he demanded sternly.
The otlu-r passeu;eM were growing
trpivelathe s to the ueltuus of the
handsome youug couple. Helen, sud
denly conscious of their observation,
commanded:
"(io up there and get uie one of my
Imxcs of candy aud some fruit. People
will think you are proposing to me."
"I am. Will you marry me, Helen?"
"Not until yon get iny eaudy."
lie came " buck, - stasgerlug under
l 'ecrliisc's hamper, and passed the por
ter going out with a telegraph blank
lti his hand.
Marston dropped the hamper .on the
-rut hi front of Miss Carstairs and
hurried after the porter.
And then Helen waited. A half hour
pnsed three-quarters. She grew wor
ried. Did he cure euough to hurt hbu-
silf In nnv way? It wasn't like Rich
ard to kill himself for disappointed
love.
She rose and went through the train.
The eves of the other passwogera fol
lowed her. She walked with ease and
I'-'htness. and from the topmost wave
of tier brown hair to the tip of her tan
K'ots she was absolutely correct, mod
ish, beautiful.
She found Marston on the observa
tioti platform, with his moody eyes
fixed 011 the shining rails that seemed
to slip from lit ueath the train to end
lu the euuset.
As she i ame up bfhlnd hhu she saw
s(imethiu? In his face that touched her
with tenderness. She droped her
b:;ud.s ou his shoulders. "Oh, little
bud boy," she said, "you read the tele
gram!"
"Don't Juke," he said hoarsely. "1
urn punished enough."
"If you hail not leen so-so Imperti
nent." Mis Carstalrs Informed him,
Vhould have told you before that
promised Deering to wire whether
had decided to lo marry you, not
whether I w as going to marry hltn."
Marsfou gezed at her In a duised way
"Then your 'yes' meant"
"That I am going to marry you, little
bad boy," ald Miss Carstalrs coolly.
