It's a mighty mean democrat
that can't give President Roosevelt
credit for bricging into the fold
thousands upon thousands of voters
who a few years ago would have
been insulted if you bad (old them
that the corporations were control
ling the dominant party ia Ameri
can politics. Through RooeeveJt
although be has many shortcom-
iogs on enforcement of law, they
have found out that millions of
wooer was spent to elect presi
dents, and that the corporations
were controlling our legislation at
all points. The same grafters are
now after a ship subsidy bill; after
an asset currency law; and want
the tariff left severely alone. Un
fortunately for the morale of those
who must have a leader in order to
formulate ideas of economic worth
or unwortb, Mr. Roosevelt supports
the ship subsidy measure. But he
will be forgiven this lapse if he will
take hold of real tariff reform and
stop tariff robbery.
The Deacon Remembers a Gambler
They say that Billy Ayers is dead,
Ad' gone to his last rest,
That never again he'll place his bets
Where chances look the best
His form aroun' the ol' gran'stan'
We'll never see agen
Fcr Billy Ayers has sed his prayers,
An' left the ha'nts of men.
When ol' Billtown had races fine,
An' horses lit fer kings.
Bill Ayers was here, an didn't keer
Fer losses an' seen things
He'd bet his money on a hoss,
An' if he won the race,
You couldn't tell that Billy 'd won
By looking at his face.
He alius looked so very grave,
The while his eye was kind;
Somehow you kindo' liked the man,
An' to his faults was blind.
'Way lack iu Eighty, at a Fair,
At Hilltown's ol' Fair ground,
I saw o! ' Billy tnrn a trick
That had a golden sound.
A crippled lad was hunchin' 'long
The street one Autumn day,
An' he was broke, an' hungry, too,
So Billy heard him say
The gambler pulled his wallet out,
An' called the lad aside,
Put fifty dollars in his hands
An' then, the cripple cried! -'
That made me love ol' Billy Ayers,
He'd many sins, I know, .
Yet bad a heart as big as part
Of Ringling Brothers' show
An' when ol' Billy meets St. Pete
l'p at the golden gate,
I'll bet you Peter lets him in,
An' sponges off the slate.
