LONG A McKlNNET
"Wht' ther Th Oregon
legislature pE8ed a law forcing the
railways in Oregon, where there are
distance of magnificence, and but
one tenth of the entire population
of New York City in Oregon'a
boundaries, to carry pasaengera at
three cents per mile. In New
York, where there is travel galore
of the paenger nature, Gov.
Hughes has vetoed a two cent pas
enger Uw. The big papers, and
in Oregon, too, praise the governor
for not wanting to wreck the rail
ways in New York. Great Scott!
Think of New York, and then thick
of "Oregon, with its stretches of
waste. Either the Oregon legisla
ture is a buuch of fools or Gov.
Hughe? is a demagogue. . "What's
the difference, anyway, what a leg
islature does so long as it gets the
pious support or abuse of our pa
pers published in the interests of
partisanship, only.
Several men have fallen the past
fortnight, victims of the "un
written law," and editorial writers
have inveighed against the evil.
This is all very fine, but the victim
cf the law not on the statutes gen
erally dies "as the fool dieth". So
long as human nature is human
nature fools will pay for thier folly
with their live?, and jurors, being
human, will not convict slayers of
this kind. As the deacon would
eay: "It's agin human nature."
A Laurel woman is the victim ot
the festive fire cracker. This is one
feature of the annual holiday that
means death or injury, somewhere,
every year. Hillsboro is to have
a big celebration. Let parents
warn children to be careful where
and when they throw their fireworks.
