Dr. Lane defeated Tom Devlin
for Portland'!, major, Jane 3. It
was not a question of majorities,
for the republicans have thousands
to spire. It waa a matter of poll
ciee. The time baa come in Ore
gon when a man who stands with
the. big corporations cannot get the
populir vote. For the first time
In years the Oregonian refused to
support the republican candidate,
although it gave bat little comfort
to Dr. Lane. Its attitude, however,
doubtless gave Lane a big boost'
and the "faithful ' are swearing
they will defeat the neit man
whom the Oregonian gives active
support. If the kickers would stop
and think a minute they would be
convinced that a paper supporting
Roosevelt, and by the way, tacitly,
Mr. Bryan, could hardly ba expect
ed to aid Mr. Devlin, whose sym
pathy for the interests are manifest.
The Deacon's Moonlight Reverie
When the rammer moon is risiu'
'Rove the trees out east of town, 4
An' it sheds a meller softness
On the streets an all aroun
The garden with its roses sweet.
An' the gables of onr home
I sit back in coy rockin' chair,
An' close my eyes an' roam.
I wander back tc childhood days,
When life was all a dream,
An' hope was bright with fancies
An' all that by Gosh I seem
To see a little brown-tanned kid,
With a single gallus on,
An' that so 'tarnsl ravelled that
The thing was nearly gone.
He didn't seem to have a care,
Except a stone bruise sore, .
An' when he crunched an apple, yon
Can bet he ate the core
The boy kep' growin' as they will,
To no master waa he slave,
An then one day he changed his voice,
An then commenced to shave.
One day he met a little maid,
With a soft and tender heart,
When all at oace he was a man,
An' she of him a part;
An' then he told her of his love,
Of things he 'lowed to do,
An' ended op by weddin' her
The girl, her name was Sue!
We've lived to see our three-score -ten,
An' esrned a restin' spell;
So on the porch we rest tonight
Th: porch we love so well;
An1 think of times 'at's bast sn' gone,
When we heard onr children's croon
Their faces kissed, on this ssme porch,
Now kissed by that same moon.
