Stewart Vaughan, who for years
hag lived near Tualatin, and who
is moving to McMinnville, was in

if. Purdin, formerly of Banks,
and now of Portland, was out and
spent 8unday with relatives and
friends, returning Monday morn
ing. The Hillsboro Co operative Com
pany discovered recently that they
bad been paying taxes for a number
of years on the upper part of tbe
property built by them, and oc
cupied and owned by tbe Grange
As the law exempts the Grange
society from taxation the company
asked tbe county court for a rebate
and the teat little sum of $138 56
was refunded them.
A big team belonging to tbe Ore
gon Nursery Company ran away
on Second Street, Saturday morn
ing, starting from tbe postofficp,
and running down Second, turning
to the left at the foot of tbe Street,
and finally were stopped at the
Rroeden place, in North Hillsboro.
Outside of scattering a few sacks of
walnut seed and some lumber, and
the breaking of a line, there was no
damage.

The weather of last week was de
lightfully springlike, but the first
of the week tbe rains cooled the
temperature considerably. This
bad the effect of keeping back the
fruit, which was getting a trifle t o
far advanoed for tbe season. Mr.
Hunteman, who has a peach or
chard Southwest of town, says be
baa fine prospects for a good crop if
tbe frost doea not hit bis trees
while in bloom.

A lady about seventy years of
sge, and residing near Mountain
dale, was out last Friday, just to
see if the salmon trout had made a
run up Dairy. A large oue bit and
tbe lady pulled bim out, clear to
Banks, when bis ealmonship flop
ped off the hook. In making
a re cast of her hook into the
stream tbe fish book caught in her tl
hair, entering ber scalp, where it
luugeu umu ur, a. vt. rney went
out and extracted tbe unwelcome
visitor. The lady i a great trout
catcher in season, but avers that
there was no trout bait on the hook,
when she bad tbe miBhap and, as
a matter of fact the trout are yet
down in the lakes and bayous.
J. W. Jackson, of Glencoe, waa
in town Tuesday. Mr. Jackson
has been offered $25,000 for some
Portland property that three or
four years ago would not have sold
for more than $5,000. '
Senator E W. Haines, of Forest
Grove, and who was president of
the senate at the session just closed,
was in the city, Tuesday, on busi
ness. The Senator seems to have
withstood tbo conflict in fine shape
