HIUS80R0 ARGUS, JAN. 3t. 190? N Itcats out J. It. Bennett and Mike Wisdon by a Nose j HARD TEN NILE RACE SATURDAY f ,. ; ' I Game Little Horse Gets 8 Badly But 1 . Captarta Raa K. B.Tongue on Oregon Kid, again won the Hunt Club race last Sat urday. The course was for ten mile, with about a down of the etifleet hurdle ret placed on the stretch. V. M. Oavia rode J. H Bennett, and T. S. McRath rode Mike Wifdom. each of whom was in at the finish. The Kid itartfd rather bad, but be waa finally pulled in at the finish. Bennett and Mike Wisdom are two of the beet horses in the club, and they were eipectint to beat out the little outlaw. The hurdles were higher than usual, and this feature was thought to bs a hardship on the Hillsboro horse. The Kid was triumphant, however, and added another to his long list of victories. HOW ABOUT ROCK ROADS Shi far the Argus has received but about fifty signets asking the county to commence permanent road building. This is likely but a very small per cent, of those who ,. would like to see our county start permanent road building. The Argus is going to stilt run the coupon for a week or so yet. You are paying each year thousands of dollars for road work. The ques tion in do you want permanent work, or do you want the same old vyatem of scattering a little dust here and there? Sign up the coupon and mail it in to the office at once, how ie the time to move. The Argue has a sufficiently large list to cover, more than half of the legal voters of the county. Sign it and get your neighbor to sign it if you want a start made on per manent roads. Good roads make a cummunity prosperous. Washington county is coming to the front as a dairy coun ty. Gofd roads will make it a little Paradise and in the end-you will not suffer from taxation more than you are now paying. Move quick. Again sign it, and get your neigh bor to sign it. MRS. Hundreds of telephone poles were borne to the earth through the load of ie on the wires; the etreet cars and electric ligh's were out of commies-ion, and Imsineee was prostrated The to and sleet was caused by the raiu freezing just as soon as it touched the trees, buildings or earth. Mon day moruing'a passenger and freight trains were covered with huge icicle, and one man who vbited Hillt-boro faid Hillsboro had the finest climate he hd seen in Ore gon The sleet wave came as far as the top of the hill the other side of Beaverton. A few yeare ago we had a slight sleet storm, which did eonie damage t orchard and timber, hut it amounted to but very little. Nearly all the orchards and shade trees about lVrtland are ruined. Julius Asbahr. of Seu h Tuala tin, was ovir to tr.e city the tmt ot the week. The people cf his sec tion are trying to raise f.nv tor planking purposes, and when they have raised this amount they ex pert to ask the county to appro priate Ihe remaining amount neoe- sarv t plank trom trie Jackson Bottom bridge on south to the Dr Withvc-mbe farm. They argue that since the bridge cost thousands of dollar it can he made valuable as a highway only by adding to the road a plank roadway at least tta far south. A. Schnavely. She says the husband misrepresented bis business interests, alleging he had an interest ia a butcher shop, and that after marriage she was humil iated by the creditors of the hus band who would, order household necessities, and then not pay for them. Owing to the small road tax the city council is somewhat worried over the matter of street planking It was intended to plank several blocks on First and Third, but the small amount of money coming is likely to cause a halt on calcula tions. GIVE IT YOUR HELP Dairymen over the connty should give the association, now in forma tion, all the aid possible, for an or ganization of this kind wnl be of inestimable benefit to tboss iu the dairy industry. The proposition is to make it a county institution, and to have a meeting every two months, the meetings to be held at cenlral points all over the couniy. It will thus be seen that it is not s one town matter, and it should have hearty support. Committee on by-laws and constitution met here last Saturday, and Mem. A.N. Stanton, of Hillsboro, Wm Schulmerich, of Farmington, and i: W. Hughes, of above Forest Grove, prepared and drafei an organic law that will be adopted at the next meeting. It will cost but fifty cents to become a member, and if you are a dairymen if yon have but two or three cows send in your, fifty cents and becomes member. Mutual interest will mean mutual protection, and tbt hundreds of dairyman in the coun ty can thus work as a unit when it comes to matters of policy. The dairy interests of .Washington County will soon be second to no county in the state, and it is up to the dairymen to meet the future with a proper organization.
