Washington County may lead in

lands up in tba hills if the ideas of
those familiar with low awess
menta of these properties is put io
torus. There are many pieces of
timber that are refused sale at
from three to five thousand dollars,
and they are assessed at from
$1,000 to $1,500. It the county
should send a competent timber
cruiser into the forests to take an
inventory of the standing timber
all this would be changed. The
location, of course, would hare
something to do with the valua
tion. because nroximitr to rail or
stream would be an important
factor.
The farmers up in the hills on
Gales Creek and around Buxton
and Banks, have been talking op
this feature of our taxrolls, and
they aver that this is the only real
war to eet down to business. Al
ready thousands of acres of our
most valuable timber lands have
passed into the hands of the Blod
Rett Co , the Western Timber Corn
pany, and other corporations, sup
posably all in the interest of V. ey
erhauser and other big capitalists
Cruising would be the thing to
make it possible to get at these big
monopolists, who are all non-re
sidents.

cuit court, asking for divorce. They
were married in Cornelius in 1397.
The plaintiff's name was Harwood.
W. K. Smith, of North Plains,
found his 11 year old son, James,
in East Portland, Friday morning,
near the Inman-Paolsen mill, and
brought him home Friday night
The borce was io the care of a barn
and the don still with the boy
The police of Portland had said
the lad couldn't be found and bad
given up the chase. After the
father had found him the officers
wanted to take the boy before the
Juvenile Court, but to this there
was a protest. James said that he
had started out for a ride and just
kept going.
E. P. Cornelius, of this city, and
T. B. Perkins, of Buxton, while
driving down from Buxton, Satur
dav niebt, were thrown out of the
bugey as a result of the neckyoke
breaking, and they bad a narrjw
escape from serious injury. They
were tumbled over an embankment
and landed with the buggy upside
down on them. Their horses were
- in water up to their necks and
when tbey bad extricated them
selves from the buggy Perkins
made a jump out of the water in an
endeavor to reach what looked like
a leg, in the darkness. Perkins
went into about six feet ot water

the broken buggy down in a lum
