Recorder II. T. Bagley was may
or from Tuesday night until Wed
nesday night, but it did not occur
to him until late in the afternoon
This was occasioned by the fact
that the charter and ordinances
call for an election of mayor, in
case of a vacancy, by ballot. This
being the case it was necessary to
give Mr. Dennis two elections, one
Tuesday night, and one on Wednes
day night. In the interim the Re
corder was mayor and that was
the reason why his girth expanded.
James Smith, who will be 12
years old next Spring, and who is a
son of W. K. Smith, farming on the
T. K. Davis (dace, north of this
place, ran away Tuesday during the
day, riding a black mare. The
lad took the family dog along with
him and went to Portland, where
he applied at tbe Chas. Mensinger
home, about nine in the evening,
for lodging. He was denied on ac
count of room, and went away.
The boy has ran away several
times. His father says he is not at
all vicious, and that he is indus
trious. He gets a notion that he
wants to see the country aud starts
without notifying his parents. He
is very fond of machinery and when
visiting the Lewie & Clark Fair
with his mother, remained in the
machinery building, leaving his
mother to come home without him.
He turned up the next day. A
while ago he started to school, but,
instead, walked through to Port
land, taking the dog with him.
