LONG McKINNKT
Ten year ago U great corpora'
tiona of our country wr oot lor
the election of their candidates, and
their aoimna we "patriotism.'
They spent millions of dollar to
defeat Bryan and did not hesitate
to call him an anarchist, a repudl
ationist, and everything that was
vile. They have since proved to
the public that they are, as a rule,
a set of thieves of the wont type
They have robbed the living and
the dead in the name of patriotism,
and the silly newspapers, both met'
ropolitan and backwoods, heralded
each portly corporationist as worthy
of tbe nail Of fame. Alt were
scoundrel save those who support
ed what the corporations supported;
all were rebels who wanted what
the corporations, both bank and
trust of all kinds, did not want.
Bryan supporters were called liars
when they said that millions were
sent out to corrupt the popular will
but it transpires that tbe charge
was only too true. As a promi'
nent republican said ten years ago
"Bryan is just ten years ahead
of time:" 1 It begins to look as
though he was right, and that Bry
an it coming into his own.

When Bryan charged that the
big fellows who were spending
money to defeat him were tbe true
anarchists he told the troth, and re
cent events have proved it; when
he told the people that the big cor
porations were the interests that
were violating the law he told what
has since transpired in history; and
when hs asked for the confidence of
the American people he only asked
what he wss worthy of getting but
the very best he could do was to
poll a majority of the Caucasian
votes in 1896, and nearly as many
in the 1904 campaign. But all this,

TIMES MAN AWAKENS
One of: tbe absurdities of the elec
tion is the outcome of the vote on
the big appropriation bill which
was held up two years ago by tbe
appeal to tbe referendum. It now
appears as if a majority voted"yes"
on that question. The effect is to
legalize the appropriation and all
the BchoolB may be maintained and
the appropriations for new normal
school buildings will be available at
once. It is safe to guess that not
one voter in ten was in favor of
those new buildings, but they have
voted for them jot tbe same. The
voters sre using their newly scquir
ed power of veto very absurdly
when they approve by their votes
what they denounced so generally
with their mouths. Forest Grove
Times.
Jf tbe Times will look at this
county's vote on appropriation bill
be will find that it was badly beat
en. The vote, however, should
have been larger for the veto. Tbe
Times, like other county republi
can papers, feared to advise veto,
because it would practically be ad
vising a vote for Chamberlain.
the Times man had awakened be
fore the election and pointed out
the absurdity of sustaining the
graft, it would not no be criticiz
ing voters.

SAFETY AND PROFIT
Safety and profit are tbe two im
portant things to consider in select
ing a bank. Money is such a hard
thing to get and so hard to keep,
that it is folly to place it where it
will not be safe. Thus thoce who
are saving money naturally wish it
to earn mors money. Therefore,
the financial institution which com
bines safety and profit is a desir
able depository. Buch is offered
