SIGNS OF THE TIMES
The enormous Tote in Nan York for
W. R. He rat, tha advocate of mu
nicipal and government ownership
of public utilities, furnishes a mile
poet lor progress that muet not be
ignored by thinking citiiens.
Hearst baa advocated hia ideaa
through his great chain of papers,
and the results have not been what
was expected. Bat, just as soon as
he aserged the personal equation
into the question, reeulU followed.
He had a message to give the peo
plethe corporations are ruling
the country, and they are ruling it
with an iron hand; they are elect
ing officers municipal and other
wise that give them franchises
worth millions for a mere campaign
contribution; they are selling light
and fuel, the product of natural re
sources, and necessarily the inheri
tance of the consumer, at prices
that are robbery; they are making
the email shipper pot his back
against the wall that the big ship
per may thrive and fatten; they are
forming a monetary trust that
makes or unmakes good times;
they own, body and soul, sixty per
cent, of our natural lawmakers
and these same lawmakers know it,
and enter other avenues of theft
and dishonor and all this because
people have slept on their rights
and sneered at the voice of the re
former. Seriously speaking, this is not a
matter of partisan politics, for the
"national honor" democrats and
the "dear old flag" corporation re
publicansmen of capital whose
meed of party is conditions which
give the most of the result of others'
toil meet hand in glove; like
Odell.of New York, and Murphy,
of Greater New York.
The time ia rapidly approaching
when corporation managers from
Rockefeller down to the tariff and
banking barons will reap the whirl
wind they have sown since the
close of the Civil War.
. Party lines are going to be for
gotten in the great coming conflict,
and the man who has been dealing
in public franchises, at public ex
pense, and at profit to himself,
may as well begin to construct hie
cyclone cellar.
All that it needs to sweep the
county this actual reform move
meet is the personal equation of
a few more men like Hearst and
Toui.L. Johnson to aid those al
ready in the front rank of labor for
the real love of public institutions

"But Isn't that very little, even for a

"Hut's the regular price," assured

"She must have been very hard on rlb

"What have the ribbons to do with

"She couldn't spend It for paper." ex

possibly use more than a box a week.
The ribbons are about all else she had

"You came to aee about a place," he
protested.
"As stenographer" she finished.
"As cook," Instated Jlmmte firmly.
"I distinctly told them to send up s
cook."
"The ball boy said It was three
flights up," she went on.
"What has the hall boy to do with
it?" he aaked curiously. "I never told
him I wanted anybody."
For answer, ahe drew a clipping from
her pocketbook. It waa an advertise
ment for a stenographer and gave the
bouse address, but no name,
Jimmle Immediately became eon
scious of his dressing gown. It was
all right to talk to cooks in dressing
gowns, but a stenographer and such
a pretty one!
"I'm sorry," he said humbly, "but
It's the fault of that blame boy. He
meant Miss Cartwright across the hall.
I believe ahe writes."
He showed her to the door, but to
his surprise she started down the
stairs."
"Miss Cartwright Is just across the
ball oa this landing," he called after
her.
"I-I don't think I want the place,"
she cried, struggling to keep bsck the
tears. "I don't went to work here."
And she went her wsy conscious, even
In her anger, that she was rather sorry
that Jlmniie had not wanted a stenog
rapher. Even In a dressing gown Jlm
niie was an attractive fellow.
As for Jlmniie himself, he kept think
ing about the pretty typewriter all the
morning, and even the arrival of a well
recommended cook brought no solace
to bis mind.
Even a telephone sammons to dine
with his favorite aunt did not give the
pleasure It usually brought, even when
that kindly lady admonished blm to be
prompt ss she bad invited a particu
larly attractive young woman on his
account "Better get her to run the
house for you," she laughed, Just ss she
bung up her receiver, "you bsvs such
trouble with aervanta."
For a moment Jlmmle did not recog
nize her in her filmy dinner dress. He
was merely conscious of a vision of
loveliness In something soft and green
-or blue, it might hav been blue.
Then a cool, self possessed voice re
marked that she bad had the pleasure
of meeting him before. Jlmmle's date
became a atupor, from which only the
announcement of dinner roused him,
and be was half wsy to the dining
room before he really realised that the
vision of the morning was beside him
and was saying something to blm.
Ashamed to acknowledge that he bod

dom, and Immediately became aware
that be bad said the wrong thing.

"But what waa It you asked?" be

"I asked you If you really thought I

little laugh.
"And 1 aald "Yea. " he cried contrite
ly. "What a fool you must have taken

"Then you admit your mistake?" ahe
aaked smilingly.
What Jlmmle auswered waa not to
the point and wholly unworthy ot re
cital. There are times when eveu a
confirmed bachelor may grow suddenly
foolish, sud through that dluner Jlmmle
would have rivalled even a college lad
making love to hla first widow.
A more Important conversation, aud
one more worthy ot record, waa held a
tew weeks later In th Uorbam li

"Why don't you go and live at a
hotel?" ahe said. "Now that you have
come Into all that mouey through the
sale of your western property, you do
not need to keep bachelor ball on ten
dollars a week for all material," ahe
quoted.
"I've a better Idea than that," he de
clared aerlouely; "one my auut gars
me. I think I'll hire a housekeeper."
"What will you pay her?" she de
manded, her eyes twtukliug at the
memory ot Jlmmle's serious parody on
bargaining.
"Love and affection aud other valu
able considerations, aa the legal docu
ments say," he answered promptly.
"And as you were an applicant for a
place you shall bars first chance will
you, dear?" He had dropped hla ban

"I think I'll have to," ahe auswered
shyly. Theu with a sudden flash of
humor, "If only because you look so
forlorn when your rooms have beeu

"The blessings of Cupid be upon the
mistake." aald Jlmmle softly. "I think
Fit give that hall boy $3, because I

able that morning." Which waa an
eminently practical termination to a
proposal by an oddity like Jlmmle.
