Whitten, who runs the John Henrici ranch on Sauries Is land, was out the firtt of Ihe week, visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Whitten, or Phillips. About the middle of October Mr. Whitten lost 19 head of dairy cows, and 80 tons of hay. besides a lot of farm machinery, by reason of the farm barn burning up one night. His loss represents about $1,500, while Mr. Henrici lost 1800 on tbe bsrn, there being no insurance. Henrici is well known by many Washing ton county people, especially in the eastern part of Ihe county. For many years he waa the hading vio linist ot ibis part of Oregon, and he still handlea his bow with all his old skill and tune. The county court has decided lo see whether or not a man must pay for a bridge, which burned by rea son of his rareleesness. Some time in the Summer W. W. Crowder, of ScholU, set fire to aa ash stomp, close lo the approach of the Scbolls' bridge, and ss a result, although be had been warned, part of tbe sp' proach burned, costing the county less than a hundred dollars to re pair it. Mr Crowder will be call ed in (o settle, and in case of re fusal the commissioners will be in circuit court with the claim.
