MERCURY 95 IN THE SHADE
Before an audiDce aluiocst
inconceivably rait, his was tk one
pretence, his the one voice to en
force instant silenc and rapt at
tention in every nook and corner
of that stupendous, echoing edifice,
where others could hardly he heard
with the aid of threats from the
chair, and their execution by uni
formed officials who threw disturb
ers bodily out the doors. This was
partly due to idolatry of Bryan ad
herents, but largely also to his co
gency in debate and to the fact
that while others indulged largely
in meaningless mouthing, Bryan
always had something to say that
was definite in its bearing and fear
lens in its utterance. Oregonian

V.
I Eight years ago three distinct
classes of corporations were direct-
; ing their influence and spending
their money to defeat Bryan and
the democratic party for congress.
The manufacturing interests, the
I railroad interests, and the hanking
' interests of the East, one and all
, three, were vitally interested in
t Bryan's defeat. Since that time
.' the stocks of these three classes of
i corporations have practically gone
into the hands of a close corpora
tion, the railroad interests proba
bly being lees effected in this man
ner than the others. These three
interests, being practically one, at
. thU time, there is a unison of effort
in matters political that has not
: heretofore existed. They now
have their ideas of government im
posed upon both our national par
ties, 1 1 though the radical influence
of men like Mr. Bryan enters the
democratic platform, here and
there, and the ticket will receive a
support in the East that for eight
years has been denied it. This
makes the presidential contest in
; teresting to the observer who has
i no particular sympathy with
either platform or candidate. It
! gives Parker a chance to carry
-some. of the eastern states that
were lost to Bryan, and as the
eastern democrats conld not hope
to carry the West against Roose
velt unless through a candidate
that would be weak in the East,
eastern democrats contend that
Parker is the strongest man that
could have been nominated at St.
tuiB. Of Parker's ability there
can be no doubt. Of Roosevelt'B
popularity in the west there is no
question. The fight, then, is to be
in the east and it really looks,
notwithstanding there are some
democratic features in the plat
form on which Parker is running,
that the big fellows are caring not
which way it goes, and they will
not fight Parker like they toughl
Bryan. This makes it look like
fighting chance for Parker.
REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS.
Mayors Cornelius, of Hillaboro,
And Hoge, of Forest Grove, have
appointed progressive men as del
egates to the Oregon Improvement
League, and it is to be hoped that
the gentlemen will respond and at
tend the convention at Portland on
August 2 and 3. This meeting is
bound to redound to the better
ment of the state, and, until the
business men of the state pull to
gether, like the business men of
Washington, that state will lead us
in the race for improvement and
eastern immigration.
