Th responses to tie toasts were all gratifying and of interest, J. P. Wagner bringing down the house by his Depewiao paraphrases. Grand Keeper of Record & S?al Stinson, of Salem. nd J. H. McKibben. of Portland. were present, and Hillsboro and McMinnville had good delegations in attendance. Sheriff Sewell need not feel at all badly that he was beaten in the election. In the first place he was running sgainst a normal majority of aix or seven hundred, and he was pitted sgainst a young man of good family and of business integ rity. It was just a matter of ma joritiestwo good men and one with a big party majority behind him. ' Mr. Sewell will leave the of fice with a good record for himself as a public servant. He has given the public a fine administration, and he need feel no humiliation over his defeat. C. W.
