L0S6, EDITOR. County Official Paper. Subscrfpilon: One Dollar pr Annum. 81s Months, 00 CU; Three Vonlha Sirta. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY BY The Argus Publishing Co. What with the postofiice scandal and the army plove contract scan dal, it woul i seem that the admin istration had sutlicunt troubles of it own bvit on top of this comes some more nasty w.-rk. This time it is the Indian Ward a of the (i.v ernment which have been grafted Philip C. Garret, resident of the Indian Rights Association, of Phil adelphia, has t ubmitted proofs that the Indians of the country have been gouged out of millions. Will Knox, the Attorney-General, make amove? Consideiing that he has delayed all other investigations of s-andal in a manner 'o i-how that no one is to be hurt if they are only in high places, this latest trouble will probably go untouched un'il he is pushed by the people. It is apparent that there fellows in office so loudly howling "patriot ism" and an "honest dollar" ar noi particular just now whether the dollar is honest or not, just so long as it Las suQicient consistency to stick to the palm of the hind. Democratic clubs everywhere are taking up the name of W. R Hearst, of the San Francisco Ex aminer, as a leader for the coming presidential campaign. Mr. Hearst u specially strong with the labor ing classes, and the Argus thinks he is the one man that can make a strong race for the executive office. He is thoroughly American, a man of energy,, and, withal, a man of excellent judgment in the selection of men of ability. The democrats could not name a better man for strength before the people, and, in naming the Californian, they would develop great strength, not withstanding the richer element would fight his candidacy to the bitter end. Donelson, yard foreman, Practical Demonstrations of Piano Con struction at Eilcrs Piano House, That arc Going to Prove Most ValuaWe to Everyone. An opportunity is now nffeied every one to become thoroughly in formed concerning the construe tion of a piano, to learn the actual method of building one of thene wonderful instruments, which will enable buyers to di?cr'uiiuate be tween one which is well and one which is poorly made A piano which presents an ex ceedingly well-made appearance, at first may have a very pleasing tone. But if, after a little use, the true becomes tlat, the action slug gish, and it gets nut of tune easily, it is evident the construction is very faulty a unewhere. Rut the mhehief is then done. You have nude your purchase and must content yourself to have your instrument 'tinkered" up from time to time, unless you an in a position to purchase a new one. This is expensive experience, and simply because when you made your purchase you lacked the knowledge of practical piano con struct ion which enabled vou to discriminate 'ltween a well and a poorly made piano The principle upon which that delicate piece of mechanism, an action, is made, is the same in cond piano and in poor pianos. Rut the manner ol construction is radically different. In the good piano the wood is care fully selected and thoroughly sea soned, the fe'ts are made of the finest' and choicest wool, that will not "pack"' nor wear, leathers and bushing cloths that will not stretch, and the most carefully proportion ed metals, the who'e being so ex actly put together and adjusted that it works as beau'ifully as the joints of the human body and as quickly, yes, mere quickly than thought itself. Wherea, the action in a cheaply constructed instrument ia apt to be made of second class or inferior lumber, cut so as to secure the largest number cf pieces to the foot, without any reference to insuring the firmest grain. Every other material used in such pianos is made with the same object of sv ing money poor felts that soon lose their "springness," cl ith and leathers th.it stretch, and metnl that cannot and do not stand wrar. so that the action soon becomes so "rheumaticky" that it develops in the mind of the player, an uncer tainty when a key is struck, wreih er it will convey the motion to the string or not. Pianos with such actions are correspondingly poorly made throughout. To learn to detect all these de fects is a very easy matter, and it is with an object of enabling pur chasers to avoid being misled into securing such faulty pianos, which are so loudly exploited in some di rections, and enabling them to se lect one that is good, substantial and well made, that Eilerb Piano House has recently adopted a broad educational policy. With large piano and organ re pair rooms, and a force of expert workmen, besides salesmen thor oughly schooled in every detail of piano construction, we are amply prepared to let you study this in the most thorough and practical manner. Whether you contemplate mak ing your purchase now, or at some future time, you are welcome to come to any of our stores and learn all about piano construction, abso lutely fres of charge. You will find such study not only instruct ive and va'uable, but also both in teresting and entertaining. EI L ICRS PIANO HOUSE, Washington St , cor. Park, Portland, Oregon.
