When the imperialists were in their glory about two years ago they were fond of declaring that this waa a nation and a world powe, and could do anything that any other nation could. Now they have changed their tune, and this nation ia helpleaa before a lot of land pirates who are robbing the people of all they produce, except a bar tiring. The. refrain to the aong they now sing is: "Can't, can't, can't." The trusts cant be suppressed. The railroads can't be restrained. Cars can't be furnish ed for the farmers to ship their own grain. Other nations own the rail roads, bat this nation "can't." Other nations own the telegraphs, but this nation "can't." Other na tiona have a parcels post, but this nation "can't." When it waa wars of conquest and making a foreign people sub jects, this nation could do it. When it came to tacking on a few thous ands islands as "appurtenances" of the republic, this nation could do it. Then It could do anything that any other nation could do, but whan it comes to protecting the common people from the rapacity of the trusts, it is helpless. It "can't." The republicans have adopted as their defense the old aaying: "You can and can't youll be damned if you do and you will be damned if you don't. Nebraska Independent. ANT MANHOOD LKFT. It is announced in Wall street that John D. Rockefeller has just com pie ted negotiations that place erery oil field in the United States in bis hands. There cannot be any competition in the future, and you will have to pay just as much for .oil as Rockefeller demands, or go without it. That is what the accumulation of wealth in a few hands means. Pretty soon the coal mines and other necessities will each be in the hands of one man who, owning all, will be able to charge what ha pleases. There will be no trust. It will simply be the ownership of the necessity by one man. What, will you do then Against this thing The Independ at has been issuing warnings for years. The dsnger accompanying the concentration of wealth has been pointed out by every great economist. That it would end in the overthrow of the present forms of society and modes of doing busi ness must have been evident to Vary man who gave it serious thought. Yet the republican par' ty has gone on giving away fran chises worth hundreds of millions and allowing monopolies in trans portation by which hundreds of .millions more went into the hands . of the few. Neb. Independent. that had he been on the ticket in stead of Geer, he would not! have polled as many vo'es as Fur-j nih. All there things have their bearing in the contest at Salon). Aside from this. Fulton is not a profound s'ateeman in any sense of the word. He hs left his im press upon the Mays' law only, as beneficient state measure, and this is the law that he openly ig nored at a time that he should have embraced it. It begins to look as though Mr. Fulton must remain a Salmon statesman. If he shall lose this election he will be s dead rooster in the political Pit- It is apparent that Fulton can not be elected to the United States' senate, and Oregon will be minus his valuable services at the Na tional capital. Mr. Fulton was never a serious, open-handed can didate, as was evidenced by his not being nominated as the avowed candidate on the regular republi can ticket last spring. Fulton was the supporter of the Mays' law, and he and his friends had control of the last convention. His was the dominant wing of the party, as organized against Oeer and Simon. He understood, perfectly, that he would have had a fight and a seri ous division, had he enforced his right to a nomination. He knew, that to beat Simon, there must be an amalgamation of all the repub lican strength which could be ob tained, and he feared that an open run would have treated him as badly as the attempt of Furnish to gat into the executive chair. As a KAttar of tact, there arc many of sold time politicians whoave. The Forest Grove Times had a pain last week in its umbilical cord and proceeded to emit its groans on The Argus because the county court eventually followed the law and gave the delinquent list to the pa per which the statute declares shall be designated. As a matter of fact, The Argus merely contended for its rights and it did not have to bluff to get them. The publication of the delinquent list, paying both papers, is done cheaper than it is worth even in one paper. If the Times would go and get a circula tkm it ran get some county busi ness. If the Times lives long enough it will find that The Argus is not given to bluffing. As,a mat terol fact, The Argus offered its list, name by name, and publica tion in any other paper would have been invalid. So far as circulation is concerned, that is answered by the fact that the Times failed to how up circulation in January when the court designates the county official papers That fail are can be ascribed only to the fact that the Times list has heart trou ble.
