DISCIPLINING THE BIO BABY,
The Oregonran objects because the
Argus and two or three other pa
pen in Oregon occasionally disci
pline the big journalistic baby,
and, Sunday, had about two col
umns of explanation and expiation,
All this because of comment on the
constant straddling tactics of the
big paper. It is the "hit bird"
that flatters, and it does one good
to tee the good old family visitor
get red in the face once in awhile.
A paper that Is anti-expansion
one month and expansion the next;
for a certain thing one day,
and forninst it the next; nine-
tenths democratic nine-tenths of
the time, and Hannacratic just be
fore the election day arriveth,
needs a little chastising occasion
ally, and, by the time the big fair
rolls around. The Argus expects to
have moulded the Oregonian to
that fairness which should charac
terize a metropolitan journal in its
editorial positions on the public
questions.
MOT VERY" LIKELY.
The assumption that the condensed
milk factory at Forest Grove will
kill the creameries is far fetched
until we have proof to the contrary,
The factory will be the means of
putting in many more cows in that
part of Washington county, but
that it will make worthless the
creameries that are dotted here
and there, within a radius of eight
or ten miles, is not believed , There
is room .for both the established
creameries and the factory as well,
As a matter of fact the farmer will
patronize either or both, as the
case may be. Having hogs as a
necessary adjunct of the dairy
business, and having them to feed,
and having calves to feed, the far
mer will want more or less skim
milk, and this he will be able to
get by taking a part of his product
to the creamery. There is no rea
son why the creameries and the
condensed milk factory can not
successfully . operate in the same
field. Butter we must have, and
we shall not import it not very
likely.
The Argus has contended for
years that Washington county was
soon destined to lead in the dairy
i : i .
uuHiness ana irom iuture pros
pects it begins to look like, that
within five years we shall lead all
other Oregon output of dairy pro
duct. The establishment of the
condensed factory at Forest Grove.
and the increased business of the
creameries au over me county go
to indorse all that has been claim
ed in the past.' Next year should
and will be a banner year in the
dairy industry of Washington
county. All that is necessary is to
stop "knocking" and go to milking.
Wall street, seems to be giving
aid and comfort to Hill's ticket in
New York ' this Fall, They evi
dently want 1q show Mr. Roosevelt
that he must walk the plank and
if Hill's ticket is beaten there will
be sufficient indication that Teddy
has made his peace with the trusts
and that he has "never meant it."
The Oregonian' worries lest it
shall advertise The Argus and
other Oregon papers. There is
much evidence of water on the
brain down that way since Scott
left for "Yurrup." Some one will
have to send a water witch down
there, with a forked hazel, to locate
the stream, lest the editorial rooms
be perforce transferred to Salem.
TnE people will pay for it and,
therefore,, the people should
whether or not there should be an
appropriation for the Lewis &
Clark exposition. That is the Way

the purpose tor which the direct
legislation amendment carried to
ive the people a chance to say
what they want. The Argus was;
the first paper in the slate to sug
gest that the jnxiple have a chance
to say what they wore willing to
give for the lair, ami it still adheres
to that idea. An extra session to
p on the regular, would not hurt
matters at all if it will he arranged
to give the people a chance.
