NUT UNPALATABLE!
It is not at all unpalatable when
. -.1 . it. j r
uiu-c arraveu against vne greeu 01
capitalism, read the quips that the
. Hanna press publish against the
"heroes and patriots the gold
democrats" where those gen'ry
have control of the party which
should, everywhere, be purely
democratic. It will be remember
ed that these Clevelandites were
the holiest of the holiest, and when,
in 18 and 1900 they were refer
red to as "patriots and lovers of
their country," they would roll up
their eyes like calves at nurse,
bunt at the udder, and think they
were all kinds of George Washing
tons and Abe Lincolns. It will be
remembered that they took the
abuse given the Cleveland admin
istration when the Hannaites call-
ed it a record of perfidy and dis
honor," because in the neit breath
they were called saviors of their
country for berating the only true
democracy; and because, forsooth,
they had an idea that a democratic
party, under existing conditions at
that time, would not poll enough
, votes to carry a woman's suffrage
convention. These little tin gods
thought that it would never again
be a democratic yearr and they
' wanted to get out of the party.
They wallowed in the slime of
kindness, which was the sort of
"statue of frauds" order, and now,
when they are in control, the erst
..while aDnlauders eibinelr ask
c O f
them if they "propose to give the
country some more Cleveland soup
houses." Burn it to them, breth
reu of the Hanna press. You can't
hit the demagogues too hard. - It
is not unpalatable to those who
have stood against capitalism in
the past. No one likes cowards,
whether political or otherwise.
Many cuckoo" journals are say-
ing: "The arbitration agreement
to end the coal strike is a great
victory for the president." Let us
see as to this. Mora n was the real
power which agreed to the arbitra
tion plan. A majority of the men
selected as the board are in sympa
thy with the mine owners. It looks
as though the nl ire board was se
lected by the mine operators. Of
course, there will be a small raise
given the striking miners. Morgan
(the alleged democrat, according
to Hanna papers) want the repub
licans to hold the lower house of
congress. It began to look bad for
the Hanna party. A small raise
would not hurt the operators, for
their trust is so strong that the
raise, and more, can be squeezed
from the consumer. In this way
they are to keep the "labor vote"
for this year, and put the possibil
ity of a strike beyond the time of
the next presidential campaign.
It will l)e remembered that the
settlement of the strike just before
the last presidential election was
due to Mr. Hanna. There is no
doubt but the fear of an'i-trust suc
cess at the polls furthered the set
tlement along lines of arbitration.
The victory is a political one, but
it is not great by any means. And
it is that transparent that foolish
is the laborer who can not see
through the thin places.
Banker Corbett is out for an
extra session of the legislature, and
. it is amusing to see how quick the
great Oregonian pulls in its oppo
sition to Geer's idea of making the
call. Corbett wants to see tbe leg

propriation for the coming Lewis
& Clark Exposition, and he wants

The county board of equaliza
tion, consisting of the county judge,
clerk and assessor, is in session this
week, and hearing complaints as
to taxation. So lar very few have
asked for any reduction. The
board will continue for two days
more, Friday and Saturday. The
last day will most likely be a
crowded one, as many always wait
until the very last.
Word is received from Mr. Lnuns-
