The congressman who voted lor the Dingley law and now excuses bis vote by saying that the duty on coal was "smuggled" into the bill is altogether too provincial to be sent back to Washington, where some back-driver might rob him. or a waiter in some second-class restaurant might short change him. Democratic journals, for some lime have told readers that there was t7 cents per ton tariff on anthra cite, while the journals, with big fronts under their vests, like the Oregonian.have been emphatically denying it. supported by Teddy. The big journals, within the last three or four days, are now swal lowing their medicine and admit ting that the. tariff of 67 cents was "smugcled" into the bill. Gee! What a poor lot of ninnies we have back in congress! It is time for Messrs. Hanna, Quay, Piatt and their followers in national politics to snivel! Such By mi thy they have for the poor, and such hatred for the trusts! And to think, too, that the old "gag" about the Stand ard Oil people having no protec tion under the Dingley law! The Oregonian's dispatches now admit that there is about 40 per cent ad valorem on all Standard Oil prod ucts, except one or two of the out put! What a pretty mess! A year ago there were no trusta at all, which were trusts by virtue of a tariff. Today these lickspittle journals have found out that they have lied to their readers for the profit of trusts. And yet, they ask people to support them still. v v ; .. 1 , f Mrs F.liia Imbrie, firai.il ( hie', Bathbou Sisters of Oregon. JtST THE OTHER VI ISO. The Forest Grove Times mentions the fact that The Argus hopes that the Hill crowd will be defeated in New York, and comments upon the lack of harmony between "breth ren." The Times may not know it The" Argus does but the Hill crowd is one wing of the party of Mr. Hanna. For proof of this just ask any old time reliable thick and thin republican paper like the Ore gonian, if Hill and Cleveland weren't veritable heroes in 1896 and 1900 just because they voted and lent their sympathy for Han nacratic ideas. Of course, The Ar gus wants to see Coler beaten for governor. Not that it likes Odell ' the more, but because all good democrats like Hill the less. So long as trust sympathizers are to , be elected, it doesn't matter which , wing of the corporation supporters gets into Power.
