A FIGHT TO THE DFATH.
The great strike in the Pennsyl
vania coal fields means either life
or death for the labor unions
With all the vaunted prosperity in
me tasi a is round that there are
many men who will take the place
of the union men and the opera
ors can easily take advantage of
the alien labor law (contract law)
and put plenty of men to work.
And here is where comes the part
ing of the ways! The government
as it is constituted will send out
troops to "protect" property for
the opera'ors. It is very easy for
a few unscrupulous operators to
incense miner so that there will
be more or less violence and then
comes the clash. As a matter of
fact, the government will send no
men to protect the capital of the
laboring classes their muscle
bu', it can easily send troops at the
eipense of the general public to
protect those at the head of the
coal trusts. The fight is against
labor unionism and the trusts of
all kinds are aiding the coal trust
because they want to see organized
labor a failure. The spectacle of
troops supported by people urned
against them is not new in this
age oi trust domination of sta'e
and nation. In the long run, lab
or unions will win because in the
union is the capital of labor which
must be directed against corporate
power in order to get value for lab
or performed. It is a fight to the
death. Labor unions have in the
past, voted wi h the corporations.
They have votes enough to control
I'ltruieiumi elections as well as
congressional elections. Dema
gogues have voted them in the
wrong channel in the past. Let it
be hoped that ere long, the labor
ing classes will see the error of vot
ing into power those who are
terested in "cheap labor."
Is another column will be found
a summary of the HXV2 assessment
made by Assessor Wilcox. Every
citizen should read this and digest
it well. It is always a good thing
to be informed as to the tabulated
resources of your own county.
While the assessment is not the
true value it still in many instanc
es gives one a better idea than
random as to what the county has,
and as to its future possibilities.
It is full of speculation, for in
stance, when you look at the acres
of tillable lands, and then look at
acres of non-tillable land, a large
per cent, of which in the not dis
tant future will make homes for
many thousands.

TnE Nebraska Independent, a
paper having a great circulation in
the middle states and one of the
most reliable journal in the na
tion, says that the New York port
recently collected a duty of sixty
seven cents per ton on a cargo of
Welsh anthracite which was im
lorted to this country. This tar
in was collected through a provis
ional paragraph in the Dingley
bill. And, yet, some of our
"brainy" friends who know it all,
tell us that the coal trust has no
protection in the Dingley bill and
that this is an. example of a trust
existing without the fostering of a
tarm. I5ut the cat is now out of
the bag in this latest ruling of the
treasury department. Dumbheads
who think that the big corpora
Uons are not in politics for "de
stuff" are not entitled to a vote.
The Slate of California bids fair
to create another innovation in
politics and if all signs do not fail,
two labor union congressmen will
be sent back to Congress. Messrs.
Livernash and Wynn two union
labor men have been nominated
by the Union Labor par:y and the
Democrats have indorsed them,
thus giving them splendid chances
to defeat Eugene Loud and Julius
Kahn, two of the corporation con
gressman. Loud's defeat should
be heralded with joy by every
country newspaper man in the
union, whether Democratic or Re
publican, for he for years has
been ' the avowed enemy of all
country newspapers.
All things are logical to the
ninnies. A few years ago and our
cuckoo editors of country republi
can journals were crying about
"dishonest silver dollars." The
administration saw that the count
ry needed more money, that it had
to have more money and straight
way half embraced the demo-pop
idea of money and coined a great

This Oregonian states that the
legislature is likely to take all ap
pointing power away from the gov
ernor. It is hardly likelv that it
will do any such thing, but if it
should it will relieve Mr. Chamber
lain of a great deal of trouble and
anxiety in the matter of appoint
ments. It would be just like the
Scott-Fulton combine to do just
what the Oregonian threatens. As
a matter of fact, I hey would only
for remembering that "chickens
come home to roost."
