Wilbur, the 1-1 year old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Ueo. Campbell, of
South Tualatin, died . Sunday
morning and wn buried Monday
in the I. 0. O. K. cemetery. This
was the only son in the family, and
the bereaved parents have the sym
pathy of the entire eommuni,ty in
which tiny reside. Mr, Campbell,
the father, is a brother of Rev. J.
A Campbell, of Portland, formerly
of llillsboro, and also a brother of
David Campliell, of this city.

signed by property owners along
Main and Second streets for the
granting of a franchise to the West
Hide A Suburban Railway Com
pany, the projector of the electric
line. The company is asking the
the Multnomah county court to
grant a franchise along the county
road (Conn 11 road) for a distance
of l HtH") fret, this week, and the
llillsboro matter will be presented
to the council in a few days. The
right-of-way will all be secured in
a very short time, and Mr. Gray
don saya that as soon as the terri
tory is signed, dirt will lie thrown.

Miss Lena Boo, of Forest Grove,
died at San Francisco, at one
o'clock this morning The re
mains will he hrougiit to Forest
Grove for buiil. Mrs. Greer was
in the California city with her
husband, who will return with the
"remains. They were married but
a few months ago. The husband
is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J, C.
Greer, of this city. The bereaved
families have the sympathy of
their many friend.
The Argus ha it that W. T,
Andrews, formerly connected with
the Andrew Lumber Company, of
Mountaindale, and who is also well
known down in the Middlcton and
Sherwood countries, is running on
the "untei rilied" ticket for repre
sentative up in Skamania county,
Wash., where he has a homestead.
W, T. recently lost his house and
all his household effects in the re
cent forest lire oyer in the hills.
The Argus hopes he will be elected.
Abcut fifty of the county school
officers met here last Saturday,
pursuant lo a call by Supt. Ball.
State Superintendent Ackerman
was hers, and lectured on school
needs, ventilation and sanitation,
etc , and Preston Search, who had
just concluded successful work at
the institute, also addressed them.
It was a very successful meeting,
and only for the threatening
weather in the morning, would
hnve liecn much btter attended.
These ilieetings, to follow the insti
tutes, will most likely hereafter be
a feature of our school work.

ton, were in town Tuesday, attend

Academy, of Portland, one of the
best institutions of its kind in the
Northwest. It will take three
years to hnish his course, the
school gives a thorough military
training outside of the regular text
studies.
A 10 year-old son of Mrs. John
Iiainel, of North Plains, while
playing with some children the
first of the week, accidentally got a
kernel of wheat into one of his
ears. The grain buried itself out
of sight, and the services of Dr.
Bailey were required to remove the
obstacle.

Monday of this week, William
Marines, of Mountaindale, got his
left hand in contact with a wood
saw, and two of his fingers were
badly sawed; one, the little finger,
being almost entirely severed from

hopes to save the finger.

Mrs. John McCIaran, of Gales
Creek, died lecently, and was bur
ied in the Gales Creek cemetery.
Mrs. McCIaran was well known by
some of the earliest of our pioneers
being the daughter of Edward
Wooley, whose father resided on
the donation claim now owned by
several LeisyvilUe farmers. She
was 41 years of age, and had been
married since 18,5.
II, G. Wright. Portland's repre
sentative of the Barry Marhle
Works, is in the vicinity of Hills
boro these days, taking a chance at
China pheasants. The open season
commenced yesterday morning,
and the cracks of guns can be heard
in all directions since daylight of
the opening day. Birds are not
overly plenty, it is said, owing to
the cold rains which prevailed ai
the time the eggs were hatched last
spring.
Mesdames McCormick and Den
nis, of this city, who recently went
to Grangeville, Idaho, came near
being in the hold up of the stage
which runs to that point from the
terminu. They were about to
take the stage, but concluded to
wait another day to see whether or
not they would not be met by their
father, Mr. Birdaell. - Soon after
the stage left out they regretted
not going, but, to their joy, a few
minutes later a farmer from the
Grangeville country aid tbem and
told them he had been requested to
take them out to the Birdsell place
They started with him, and a little
way out of town met the stage re
turning with a badly scared lot of
passengers who had been held up
by highwaymen.

Grant McKay, who served time
in the county jail here a few days
ago, for taking a pitchfork to
Iieaverton party, and who, prior to
that, served time in a California
penitentiary, has been trying to
have the members of a Portland
firm arrested and tried for alleged
Sunday law breaking. Some time
since McKay went to the store on
Sunday and bought some articles
other than drugs, and then tried to
have the arrests follow. Governor
elect Chamberlain refused to have
the arrests made because he could
not convict on the testimony of
man like McKay, and then the re
former came out in several letters
to the Oregonian. MoKay has sev
eral times made himself notorious.
Hinshaw & Wheeler now have
three driers running, their own,
Linn's and the Kerr's. They have
sent samples to wholesale houses
and the returns pronounce the pro
duct the best ytt reoeived this year.
Meesers. Hinshaw & Wheeler say
that other than those prunes order
ed they can handle no more until
