8ENTIMKNT VS. JUDGMENT!
A negro was recently hanged in an
Oregon town for the crime of out
race upon the person of a white
woman. The Oregon crowd acted
with just the same degree of jiulg
ment that impels a crowd of white
men in the South, when a like
crime is committed. The perpe
trator of the outrage is, to his exe
cutioners, nothing but a beast. In
their estimation law does not cover
his case and it does not in ninety
and nine cases out of a hundred.
To the casual writer of editorials,
who has never experienced the
feeling that comes to a community
that sees one of the sex violated
it is easy to write of "consideration
of law" and "anarchy." To him
the criminal is nothing but a law
breaker. To a man in touch wi
the community where a home has
been violated; to the man who sees
the result of such a crime; to those
who witness the shame attendant
upon this notation of a natural
law, it is equally as easy to see in
the triminal"nothiTfg tetn ani
mal, the extinction and immedi
ate of which is as necessary
the "limeing" of a cesspool. Hu
man nature is pretty much the
same the world over, and were
para.lel crime to visit the commun
itr of those who so ably invoke
obeisance to law they would very
likely be the first to yell for a rope.
and to one who would protest they
would say that twenty years in the
penitentiary is a huge joke and
premium upon such a crime. Sen
timent not rounded by experience
in such a matter may be very read
able, but it will not stand against
the sentiment invoked by personal
observation or knowledge of that
most beastly of crimes. There
sometimes a grim justice in an
archy. -
Jcsr so long as the leaders of the
republicans party are afraid
' nurt business" by a legal attack
upon the trusts, just that long the
trnsts will support the party and
its candidates. It is useless
anyone to cry out that the party
is an antitrust party and its can
didates. it is useless lor anyone
to cry out that the party is an anti'
trust party, so long as the attorney
general fails to carry out the pro
visions of the criminal phase of the
trust law. The mere filing of an
injunction amounts to nothing.
waste of words amount to nothing.
What the country wants is action.
Out here in Oregon, where the peo
ple have long had but one agency
of dissemination of news of nation
al cliaracter, and where people
who were against corporation con
trol have been held np to scorn as
brigands there is, it is true, no pub
lic sen timent, one wy or the other.
But, back in the populous districts
of the east, where the people gener
ally are paying a tribu e to the
trusts and know it, there is an up
heaval of public opinion that is
giving the trusts much trouble, as
well as the administration. Only
a few months ago the president
made a strong speech in favor of
"shackling cunning." He now
says he wants the trusts controlled,
but thinks we need a constitutional
amendment. Presidential acknowl
edgement goes to show that there
is recognition of the fact that the
trusts are being felt by the public.
Presidential action would go to
show that he is sincere. The
people are waiting "to be shown."
The State Fair which closed at
Salem Saturday last is said to have
been the most successful as well as
the best in the history of the state.
If this is the case, and we do not

Mr. end Mrs. C. Blaeer and little

fifteenth of next month, to tie ab

twenty-three years since Mr.
Blaser has seen that section of the
country, and he anticipates the
trip with much pleasure the visit
ing of his childhood home.
Amongst the Washington county
exhibit at the state fair was a
handsome jar of figs, grown by
Andrew Heckman, of Bethsnv.
The samples sent in were second
crop and tbey were splendid speci
mens, and provoked much atten
tion at the fair, many not knowing
what they were. Mr. Heckman
may get a third crop if the frost
keep off sufficiently long; Mr
Heckman says that this climate is
perfectly adapted to the raising of
this fruit. . .

Capt. Collins Monday shipped
to Dallas, Polk county, one of his
new manufacture of motors f
holding snd carrying books usfd
in county offices and in the big
mercantile establishments where
book-keepers write from one book
t another. The machine is hand
somely finished out of oak, and
presents a very handsome appear
ance. The wheels have rubber
tires with brass uprights, and the
Capt. certainly turned out a nice
piece of work. He will soon finish
another for the use of Clark &
Buchanan, the eiperts. The rar
shipped to Dallas wiU be used in
the assessor's office. It will not be
too much to predict that this sort
of car will be used in the majority
of mercantile houses as well as in
court house offices where large vol
umes are used, before five years
shall have passed.
Jasper E. Reeves has been si -
pointed receiyer of the Aplin
mill property, by Judge McBride,
situate at Cornelius. The rrauest
for the receivership was sworn to
by Thos. Talbotl, of Cornelius, and
who holds paper against the mill
in the sum of $6,700 and some ac
crued interest. The plaintiff al
leges that the property is not suffi
ciently covered by insurance to
Erotect bis interest. The mill was
uilt a few years ago, and is one of
the best in the county. The many
friends of the Aplins, who long
have followed the business in this
county, hope they will soon see
their way through this financial
difficulty. The mill is handsomely
equipped with modern machinery
and is worth from ten to fifteen
thousand dollars, or more. - The
receiver gives bonds in the sum of
$1000. 8. B. Huston is the attor
ney for the plaintiff.
