and who has a very good idea of
the hop business, through dealings
wiih the hop growers, states that it
will take about twentv thousand
dollars to pay for the picking with
in a radius of eight or nine miles
of Hillsboro It is possible that it
will take two or three thousand
more, but this is a very cloee esti
mate. All this is distributed
amongst home people, and the dis
tribulion 01 tin much money nee
eesarily means business. The hop
growers who spend this much
money will get all the way from
silXUWU to 1150,000 for their pro'
duct thia year, and much of this
will lie spent for labor and the fur
ther improvement and enlargement
of their yards. The bop industry
seems to be one of the beet in this
section this year.

town Tuesday and saya that the

brought a fair price. This was the
first public sale of the fall season.

Outside of a few fences burned
and the destruction of a few set
tlers' cabins, the recent forest fires

county. Here and there some good
timber was spoiled, but the dam
age in this regard waa very slight.

up Monday, and by Tuesday morn

The first frost of the season visit
ed this section Monday night, and

For years and years The Argus haa
contended tbat Washington county
was sufficiently rich in diversified
production to warrant the first
prise at the State Fair. Hitherto
it has fallen abort because of insuf
ficient display. Thia year, after
bard work, and after having eiper
ienced the needs, by many visits to
the State Fair. Mr. F. M. Heidel,
after a hard effort to get a splendid
exhibit, walked away with the
championship. Mr. Wm. J. Wall,
Mr. Heidel'a partner, sent The Ar
gus the following dispatch: "Sa

It is time for the farmers of the
county to jubilate. Messrs. Heidel

Frank Willers, the 12-year-old
son 01 u. n. w uiers, who resides
south of the long bridge, while
pioking hops at Zina Wood's yard,
Monday, fell from a hop box while
trying to get down vines, and was
precipitated to the ground, break
ing and dislocating one of his arms
at the elbow joint. Dr. W. D.
Wood reduced the fracture, set the
dislocation, and the little fellow
waa taken home, where he is rest
ing as easy as could be expected,
considering the seriousness of the
break.
