A COMMKNDABl.K ACTION.
The action of Speaker Henderson,
of Iowa, in withdrawing from the
race for congress because he does
not agree with the Iowa republican
platform in advocating a reduction
of tariff along lines which are ben
eficial to trusts, is to be commend
ed. Henderson knows that any
man can be elected on the ticket,
but he refrains from living a lie.
For many years he hat stood with
a capitalism that has filched from
the Iowa farmers through tariff
laws that were unjust. Henderson
knows this as well as anyone but
he felt, doubtless, that it were bet
. ter to pay a tribute to the big
trusts than to pay tribute to the
Cleveland-Hill element in national
politics, and he has gracefully re
tired. His last public action, after
he had received the nomination,
was the most graceful of his public
deeds, and he is to be commended
above the ranter who affects a love
of his country and yet continues to
plunder.
The Oregonian's Washington
correspondent says that J. P
Morgan and James f. Hill are
"democrats!" No doubt they are
the same kind of democrats who
voted the republican ticket as soon
as the democratic party repudiated
such "democrats" as Grover Cleve
land. Morgan and Hill were ter
ribly afraid that the democrats
would get into power in 1896 and
1900! "Democrats!" The sun
must be affecting the head of the
Oregonian correspondent.
The fact that our beloved Roose
velt does nothing against the
trusts; and the fact that Knox is
over in Europe Jo cee if he can find
one, should prove, conclusively
that the big fellows are not at all
fearful of what the president will
do. People are hot at all likely to
give the trusts a chance to again
shut down the mills as they did
when Grover went into office
the interests of Wall Street. The
beauty of the thing now is that
Wall Street and the manufacturing
interests are united, and all the
hue and cry about tariff reduction
is just a flim-flam to hold the mid
dle west into line this fall.

to dinner at Copt-land's house.
While at dinner, the stacks burned

Dant left no one to guard the en

Those who know state that there
are not as many China pheasants
this year as usual, owing to the
heavy and cold rains early in the
season when the eggs were hatch

were hatched. The native linens
ants, however, which are said to
come later, are very plentiful, and
there will te no scarcity of birds,

A dodger printed by some one at
the Grove, in the interests f satire
and humor, was brought to the city
ast evening. The screed gave evi

exactly youthful, and it nppeare

The great banking interests of
the country are represented, as all
well informed people know, by J.
Pierpont Morgan, the New York
banker and body and soul of Wall
Street; the great trusts of the coun
try, to the ninety and nine per
cent., are controlled by this genial
and national freebooter. A child
can see that the banks, trusts and
railroads are under the same man
agement. No one with a spoonful
of brains will dispute this. There
fore, The Argus submits that it has
no patience with finnicky republi
cans and coun'erfeit democrats
who are satisfied with Morgan's
financial policy and laws as to the
money of the country, yet, to the
public view dissntisiicd with Mor
gan's tariff laws. If sincere they
are ridiculous and the hole in their
logic is big enough for a ship canal.

The Hillsboro public schools will

ATTEND THE STATE FAIR.
To be Held at Saltm, Sept. 15 to 30.
Take a few days after haying and
harvesting, and go awav lor a
change of scene and air. Too few
turners and farme-s wives take
any vacation during the year.
there is nothing so good as a
change of living an 1 a few days'
ret to brace one up, hot h physic
ally and mentally. Most of the
large city business houses give
their employes one or two weeks'
vacation during the vear, and they
find it pay well in the hitter
health of their men and -renter in
terest taken by them in their
duties. A weeks' rent attending
the state fair is both educUion.il
and recreative.
The exposition building will le
filled with the finest exhibits of the
farm, field aud orchard. The live
stock show will surpass anything
of the kind ever giyen on the coast,
and no progressive farmer can af
ford to miss seeing the possibilities
of improved breeds and breeding.
