Have you noticed, gentle reader,
that the' republican party in the
East and West (that partx of the
South represents only the post
masters and customs collectors,
and Uiey have no ideas,) are t-plit
up on the tariff question? Have
you noticed that the element
which favors a- reduction of the
tariff is in control of the state
ticket, while the wing that is not is
in control, generally speaking, of
the congressional tickets. Some
one is getting 1 fooled," and that
some one is likely to be the fool
publie, that always pays the bills.
Try as you may you can't keep the
g. o. p. from truckling to what
they think is "sentiment" no mat
ter what they may practice when
they get in power. Just as our pa
triotic Oregon republicans, in the
early nineties, Were out for free eil
ver- or free anything, and then flop
ped, just so will those flippers back
in Iowa and Wisconsin "flop" as
soon as they see that they can't
elect without some corporation
dough to buy the patriotic vote
' next : November. ' Meanwhile the
voter is to be "panhandled."
The reorganixera are always talk
ing about Bryan having heen de
feated twice. But their patron
saint, the old Stuffed Prophet, was
also defeated, and defeated when
he had his whole party fighting for
him. Bryan was defeated lecause
the Cleveland-Hill-Whitnoy crowd
fought him and voted the ropubli

ful extremely doubtful! Bryan
carried six and one-half inili'cm
votes, even if he did have to carry
the disgraceful burden of the Cleve
land load, although that element
fought him fully as hard as the
Hannaites. And, unless some
thing gets very loose, the rejuven
ated dsmocracy will fight the same
old "gang ag:iin at the next presi

was defeated twice, and yet, each
time he received more votes than

If the Iowa platform really
meant what Secretary Shaw says it
does, it would be fit only to be trod
den under foot. He interprets it
to say: Reform the tariff when
' necessary (but no reform is neces
sary); cut off all duties that pro
mote monopoly tbut no duties do
promote monopoly). This ia not
idiotic, but what is much worse
rank dishonesty. The republicans
of Iowa want the tariff reformed;
and if the congress elected this fall
does not reform if, Iowa will go
democratic, and so will other states.
Oregonian.
What's the difference? Plat
forms go for nothing with a Hanna
majority! Men like Shaw hold
that the platform means nothing,
while papers like the Oregonian
hold that they mean reform thus
catching voters for the taxeaters
both ways. ' Majorities is what
they are after. ; It doesn't mat er.

Ir would appear that in this en
lightened age, there are yet m iny ,
many fools. In some sections ol
the United States there are found
editors who tell their readers that
the democratic parly is making a
great mistake in not permitting
Cleveland and Hill to operate the
party, and insinuating that victory
would follow such a wise course
In other sections, where the re-organizers
have gained control, and
have placed Cleveland straddlers
in the field, we find the republican
papers asking if the people wish to
return to Clevelandisrn with all its
"dishonor, disaster and mcompc
tency!" Someone evidently is do
ing a great deal of fooling. The
question is, ' Who is it?"
So Germany and Russia are to re
taliate on the Americas with tariff
laws. Well, well! And now we
bear that the big farm machinery
trusts are to ship their plants, in
part, to Canada, where they can
have leave to ship and sell farm
machinery to foreign countries
without having to pay a tariff when
they get over there, and still, at
the same time, squeeze the Ameri
can farmer at home by getting lie-
bind the Dingley bill. We thought
these manufacturers were the only
patriotic rascals in the country!
With all thcBe evidences of foolery
cropping up some one should, at
tome not distant future, take some
tumble to themselves that it is
somewhat silly to be a radical
Hannacrat or Rooseveltite.
Scott's Oregonian has discovered
that the little bankers of the coun
try do not want the Fowler bill
passed. Any little pop paper in
the country could have told this
months and months ago and did,
for that matter. It is the big cen
tral banks in the citiea of consider
able' population which want the
Fowler bill and they'll get it if
papors like the Oregonian do not
watch sharp The Fowler bill is
not a creature of the small banks
such a law would put them out
of business. ' The banks of Nebras
