A SIGNAL. D1FFEKKNCK
To the man who blindly votes bis
party ticket there is but little dif
ference between platforms and can
didates. To the average partisan.
in the republican ranks, it would
matter little whether the next noin
inee of that party were Hanna,
Roossvelt or the sainted Cleve
land! And, as far as their dictum
is concerned, it would matter not
to these whether Cleveland, Hill,
Bryan or a man who believed in
the recant policies of the democrat
ic party, led the hosts to victory
or defeat. But to the student of
government; to the man who voles
because he believes certain princi
pies of government are correct,
there is all the difference in the
world. It is purely a broad ques
tion of democracy, with the people
on one side, and the wealth and
aristocracy, generally, on the other
side. For proof of this, one has
bat to know that the great banking
institutions supported Cleveland
and that Cleveland, in turn, sup
ported and protected them; that
these great interests support Roos
evelt and that the President sup
ports them; support Hanna and in
turn are supported by that Xapol
eon of Finance; and foolish is he
who does not see that corf orations
are in control of the government,
and not for the general good. The
new democracy represents the mass
of the people. Republicanism, as
now engineered, represents the little
coterie of interests of capitalistic
influence; small, yet sufficiently
powerful to control all legislation
These interests wish to, and vt ill as
long as possible, control our mone
tary laws, our tariff laws, and all
, that tends to their betterment at
public expense. These facts stated
caa any one say there is "no differ
ence in paity?" The surest answer
to this is, assuredly, the fact that
these rich interests have nightmare
every time one Mr. Bryan, a quiet
and mild mannered man from Ne
Drasita, mages a speccn. or every
time one of his speeches is applaud
ed whether he he in the effete
East or out in ths alkaline desert
of the West. They know that he
stands tor the interest of the peo
ple at large. They know that he
hopes for the interests of the peo
pie at large. Tbey know that he
represents that element of our na
tional life which is neither purchas
able nor cringing to the insolence
of plutocracy and bigotry. So, then,
it is very clear why Bryan stands
head and shoulders above the "any-
thmg-for-office" democrat or repub
lican. Is it any wonder that t
man of his ideas is supported by a
virile force of our country that will
not wink at SuHerfugp, fr tie up a
race with the bosses!
The bigot and his fool still keep
the Hillsboro Mercury, commonly
known as the Independent, run
ning along its usual lines. Since
the acquisition of the bigot to the
editorial force, the sheet has revel
led in insinuations of scandal
mouthing over such stuff like unto
tuime toothless old granny. There
is one consolation about the whole
matter the fool knows he is a fool,
but the bigot, like all bigots, does
not know that he is a bigot. The
old adage, that misfortune never
comes singly, is logically proven
by the advent of this pair of scan
dal mongers, both of whom are
cowards; and both of whom are
properly measured by the genera!
public where they are best known.

Aiken's attorneys think that the
state will n t convict him at the
next trial of the case. They con
tend that the evidence which was
of sufficient importance to make
any case against the prisoner wbs
not admissable, and that the su
preme court has so decided. Ii
this be the case Aiken will go free,
as the other evidence is not enough
to convict. It is whispered in
criminal circles around Portland
that Aiken was not present at the
killing of the Chinaman, at all,
and that bis being connected with
ihe case was the work of jealousy
upon the part of Woodard, one of
the state's chief witnesses.
Wood Johnson, of the Johnson
Bros, sawmill, south of town, met
with a bad accident the other day.
His knee was badly injured, and
he will carry the effects of the dam
age for a long time. The trouble
was caused by the rolling of a
large log on the injure 1 memtar.
The Forest drove Times stys
that the friends of Abner Vaughn,
after that gentleman's death, found
f 1 200 in cash, which he had
buried, disclosing the whereabouts
of the money to them just before
death came. He was euppobed to
have been a poor man.
