Ranna TUB HIL.LSBORO MERCURY. The Argus is ever contentious on any question of public nature, but it cannot stoop to the level of ban dying scandal with papers like the Sunday Mercury, and Welcome, of Portland, and the Hillsboro Inde pendent, particularly, in their vein of slush. When The Argus deals with cowards it must be with cow ards who are public cowards, not private ghouls. The coward who shoots from ambush needs no re' tort, lie is worse than the worst Fillipino that ever drew the breath of life. So long as the Independ ent gets its inspiration from skulk ing cowards, just so long it will put itself beyond the plane of de cency. Here is where the matter stands and the best of the bargain it is and the public has the sense to see it in its proper light. Of this The Argus publisher has the assurance of many citizens who understand and appreciate decency, and also, who realize the source from which the indecency comes. Poor, old Mr. Gault isn't to blame for the sheet he runs. He is mere ly a tool, and The Argus quotes public knowledge when it states that, no doubt, he is an "unwil ling" tool, at that. The moths are liable to eat holes in Whitelaw Reid's knee breeches before he gets to wear them at the coronation next fall Wouldn't it make you smile Whitelaw Reid in knee breeches? It is funny, isn't it? President Roosevelt ate dinner on Independence Day with Schwab, Fricke, and other millionaires, and told the people that the "trusts" must in some way be governed. It looks as though he is keeping the right kind of company for their "government," eh? The Argus was the first paper in Oregon to suggest that the people be permitted to take a hand in say ing how much of an appropriation should be given lor ths Lewis & Clark exposition. This has led several other valley papers to ad vocate this method of disposing of the question. The Evanston library has taken a splendid way to advertise some literature which is not at all per sona grata to those who desire the purest of reading for young people. "What fools we mortals be!" The best way for the trustees to have done was to have burned the books, said nothing about it, and then, when called for, mentioned that they were not in the library. The small fry papers through out the ft ate are crying against an extra session . of the legislature. That a fiat salary law would save the state of Oregon $40,000 per year for four years is a fact, and the officers would be then well paid. The extra session should be called by Governor Geer, and many think he will make a call. The politicians do not want it, of course. But it is very hard to find an old-time politician who is look ing bard for reform, unless the tel escope of state is turned and be is looking through the big end of the glass. 3. H.
