Thi people of Oregon will next
vear Lava an opportunity to tell
by their ballots whether or not
they want to be the wal governors
ol the state or whether they want
some man, or set of men, to rule
them. The new amendment upon
which they vote, if carried, will
permit direct lawmaking, and it
should carrv. This measure has
often been branded aa a "populist"
measure. As a matter of fact, it is
a measure of no political denomi
nation, and should receive the
hearty support of all who are not
afraid of their own intelligence.
Vote "Yes" for the amendment
every time. Men who think they
are intelligent enough to vote for
men should assume that they are
sufficiently intelligent to vote for
measures. Vote to give yourself a
full measure of that citizenship to
which you are entitled. Do not
allow political differences to stand
in your own light .Cast your vote
for direct legislation, and by so do
ing you will enable yourself to
have a chance to repeal obnoxious
laws now in force and pass bene-
icial legislation when you want it
Fob twenty-five years the late
Conrad Schulmerich was a domi
nant force in the civil life of Wash
ington county. His ventures were
successful because of his intense
application. As a county officer,
when oouunissioner, he applied
the same rules in public life that
he practiced in private life. Asa
man whose word was as good as
his signed bond, he held the
teem of all who knew him; and
his reputation was known for food
where his person was a stranger.
He argued that American citizen
ship was an honor great, and re
marked to his many friends, after
a recent visit to Go-many, that
private citizenship in the land of
his adoption was better than roy
alty in the land of his birth. In
deed, so fearless was he in express'
ing this sentiment that he came
near encountering trouble when
visiting the Fatherland. His
death came, though, after the bat
tle of life had been well fought,
and this somewhat dispels the sor
row that naturally obtains when a
tood and representative citizen
passes away.
Some few of our republican states
men are favoring reduction or re
peal of duty on those articles which
are manufactured by trusts. If
this sentiment be sincere and fol
lowed out in the spirit there will
not be much left in the way of a
tariff. As a matter of dact, there
are very few manufactured articles
but what are turned out by trusts
so far as general consumption is
concerned. So long as our attorney-general
will not locate the
trusts our statesmen now working
' under a trust administration will
have a hard time to find the "oc
topus in the pluraL Again, those
who have watched national cam
paigns, and legislation which fol
lowed the dominant party's suc
cess full well know that republi
can campaign managers are not
going to commit hari-kari by crip
pling of the chief source of income
for campaign purposes. This lat
ter day sentiment is only occasion
ed by the fact the public pulse has
been found beating furiously for
clean government. Deathbed re
pentance should be a sore expe
dient for politics. "When the rev
il was sick the devil a saint was
he."
